Trump fires last members of election commission, inciting fears of midterm 'chaos'

Source: Guardian

Donald Trump has terminated the remaining members of the independent, federal commission that assists election administration officials nationwide just a few months before the midterm elections, multiple outlets reported Thursday.

The remaining three commissioners of the four-member bipartisan commission were forced out on Thursday in different ways. The one Republican appointee resigned and the other two, Democratic appointees were notified of their terminations via email from the White House presidential personnel office

“On ‌behalf of President ‌Donald J Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position ‌as Commissioner of the Election Assistance Commission is terminated, effective immediately. Thank you for your service,” the email, seen by Reuters, said.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Not just Democrats, but all Americans who truly believe in democracy and the Constitution stand up to this bully stronger than ever with this idiocy. This should never happen in America.

We should not let a vocal minority of citizens who don't have enough common sense and basic logic to realize this man never should have been elected the first time and so much of this nation's residents acted so ignorantly to let him serve a second term. You are not supposed to give the man who was by far the most corrupt and incompetent person to ever hold the office of President a second term.

In the 1860s, Americans were smart enough to realize that James Buchanan did not deserve to return and he never did. It's a shame that Americans in 2024 were not as smart. The nation had a collective brain freeze, for lack of a better term and is suffering the terrible effects of it every day. It appears we shall do so until 2028.

But things can be better with more guardrails coming for the Felon if Democrats win both houses of Congress this November.

They must have a team of strategists work on all aspects of the midterms. JFC this is going to be ugly.

While this development is a new twist, it’s not clear to me how this particular action would cause chaos with the midterms.

This commission had no authority over certification of elections, which the sole jurisdiction of each state.

Now, if Trump intends to reconstruct the commission with new appointees, then we will have to see what their intentions are. Regardless, they have no authority, their role is solely as a supplemental resource to state officials.

Meanwhile, multiple states are working together to war game potential scenarios of disruption and interference, as they have in previous elections.

Tie this bullshit up in the court system? We know his MO it's do things just to appeal courts and DELAY. (until after Jan 20th) Then we will be in uncharted territory.

this kind of work and w others wasn't at "hair on fire" stage. Remember how Rachael Maddow would say "talk me down!"

While they couldn't anticipate everything and could be some problem I felt more reassured than not.
Obviously Jan, and the others will be keeping eyes on this!

The 2002 law that established the commission, the Help America Vote Act, states the president can appoint replacements to the commission.

It is unclear how Trump will move ahead with the commission.
