Trump Files Plea To Block $5 Million Payout To E. Jean Carroll

Attorneys for President Donald Trump in a late Tuesday night court filing urged a New York federal judge not to disburse nearly $5.8 million to E. Jean Carroll to satisfy a May 2023 civil verdict holding him liable for sexually abusing and defaming the writer. Trumps lawyers said that money cannot be released to Carroll under an agreement unless and until the Supreme Court rejects the presidents new, long-shot bid for reconsideration of his petition that the high court take his appeal of that verdict.
The Supreme Court very rarely grants such requests after having denied an initial petition to take an appeal, as it did on June 29 in saying it would not hear Trumps appeal.
Trumps lawyers petitioned the Supreme Court for a rehearing of its denial, according to the new filing, which included a copy of that request, dated Monday. Collection cannot begin while proceedings remain pending before the Supreme Court, which is currently the case, Trumps lawyers Josh Halpern and Michael Madaio said in the filing in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.
Paragraph 8 [of the agreement] does not permit collection while the rehearing petition remains unresolved, the attorneys wrote, referring to a stipulation by the parties to hold $5.5 million deposited by Trump with that court as security as he appealed the $5 million verdict in Carrolls favor.

(12,624 posts)You know what the Stock Market and the US Court System have in common?
They both seem like it something that should work for the common citizen but the reality is they can only truly be used to their true potential by the very wealthy.

(1,192 posts)They will probably file some sort of appeal and gum that up for several more months.
The courts can be abused by rich people, its a feature not a bug.

(1,169 posts)He was never tried in a criminal court. He was found LIABLE in CIVIL COURT. It isn't the same as being "convicted" in criminal court.

(10,678 posts)but he's GUILTY on all counts and likely will not be running for office. That was my point..........

(1,475 posts)District Judge Lewis Kaplan has said it multiple times: Donald Trump raped E. Jean Carroll in 1996. Kaplan wrote it in May 2023, when he presided over one of the trials against Trump. And he reminded jurors of the rape
Nitpicking Chumps rape conviction is disrespectful to Ms. Carroll and unnecessary on this forum.

(54,211 posts)At this point $5 million isn't a great hardship for him. If he just paid the money and let it go, most people would forget, but he just can't let anything go. He is his own worst enemy.

(10,678 posts)He can't shut his fucking mouth nor will he. The second amount is probably $100M with interest and it's still on going and could be for however long Trump want's to drag it out.

(21,034 posts)Paying a woman he was found Civilly liable of sexually assaulting and defaming is REPUGNANT to him and DAMAGING to his fragile ego.
Like close to $6 million is a hardship for him, when he has raked in close to $2 BILLION since January 20, 2025.

(9,095 posts)Drag it out in court filings until the person dies. Case closed.
sure Ms. Carroll has a Last Will and Testament. The judgements against Mr. Trump are part of that estate.
Logically, her heirs or OMG! agencies like Planned Parenthood, Emily's List and the ACLU would be the claimants!
