The Trump administration announced Wednesday it will not renew the United StatesMexicoCanada Agreement (USMCA) in its current form. Wednesday marked the deadline to renew the trade agreement, which President Trump struck with Canada and Mexico during his first administration.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer noted in a statement that even though the administration will not renew the USMCA, it will remain in force pending resolution of these issues or until the Agreements termination.
Greer noted that the U.S. will meet with Mexico during the week of July 20 for a third round of negotiations. The United States will continue to engage with Mexico and Canada to address the Agreements shortcomings and our trade deficits with these countries, he said.
The agreement is set to automatically expire July 1, 2036, unless all three member countries agree to formally renew it for an additional 16-year term.

(388 posts)The premise of his tariffs is to get countries to negotiate trade deals. Why would he be trusted to negotiate better deals now, many with our adversaries, than he did with Canada and Mexico in his first term? If he can't manage to negotiate a satisfactory trade deal with our allies, what chance does he have of negotiating a peace/nuclear deal with Iran?

But.. why would anyone want to.
They can just move on and deal with countries
who speak human.

(173,844 posts)Technically it goes until 2036, when it officially "terminates" on its own (in its current form) if none of the signatories agree to updates.
But they are apparently in the process of updating, so things are status quo until either an updated or new agreement is reached OR it self-terminates if kept "as is" until 2036, whichever comes first.
