Over 100 ambassador roles are vacant, doubling rate from Trump's first term

Source: The Independent

Tuesday 26 May 2026 15:21 EDT

The Trump administration has not confirmed ambassadors to more than 100 nations, more than doubling the vacancy rate from the same period in the president’s first term. The gaping holes in the American diplomatic corps have left the country less informed and less able to respond to a variety of ongoing crises, according to observers, as more than half of the world's nations lack a full U.S. ambassador.

The unfilled seats come at a time of global uncertainty, as the U.S. wages a war with Iran; the Ukraine conflict threatens to spill over into NATO countries in Europe; and President Trump is pursuing a maximalist foreign policy from the Caribbean to Greenland.

As of mid-May, there were 109 vacant ambassadorships out of 195, according to the American Foreign Service Association, including those for strategically important nations such as Ukraine, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

During President Donald Trump’s first term, just 45 ambassador posts were vacant, a Wall Street Journal analysis found. “Those missions should all have ambassadors when you’re fighting a war,” Barbara Leaf, a retired diplomat who served high-level positions in the Middle East during the first Trump and Biden administrations, told Reuters. “At a moment of crisis – and it’s an open-ended crisis – this administration has left these missions in a parlous state.”

They don't govern and it's Little Marco's job was to dismantle the State Department.

9. I noticed that, not surprising with the crew that's in charge & posted by their professional organization, too.

The PDF was created by one of their organizations, the US Global Leadership Coalition.

I didn't see anything more recent. But I didn't look long either.

45's administration probably purged it from public view as if it never existed (although it was probably archived).

I know Obama and Biden have archived most if not all of their stuff (fact sheets, E.O.s, proclamations, etc) for the National Archives, which has their copy, and at least Obama has a copy for his library.

The "Briefing Room", which I used to use a lot, has almost 1300 pages and I expect word of the Ambassadors that were nominated/confirmed under his administration, are in entries there.

I did a quick search and there are trackers out there like this - https://afsa.org/list-ambassadorial-appointments

You pulled up a PDF from that group but they have a real-time tracker with a list here (current as of May 19, 2026) - https://afsa.org/list-ambassadorial-appointments#current-data

10. Our experienced and qualified foreign diplomats were mostly fired when Chump took office

There's almost nobody left in the State Department, and Chump only gives out appointments to "buddies" that he owes favors, or else they made hefty donations to Chump's campaign coffers. Once upon a time our State Department diplomats were the best in the world, and other countries used our State Dept.as an ideal example for their own. Not any more.
