Russia is hacking its way onto social media platform Bluesky to spread disinformation, company says

Source: The Independent

Thursday 21 May 2026 19:59 EDT

Russian hackers hijacked hundreds of online accounts on the Bluesky social media platform and used them to post phony news reports aimed at eroding public support for Ukraine amid Russia's ongoing, four-year war there.

As many as 2,000 posts have been removed by Bluesky since they began showing up in waves in April in an apparent escalation of Russian efforts to spread disinformation online, The New York Times said Thursday, citing the company and Clemson University researchers.

A director of Clemson's Media Forensics Hub told the newspaper that the Russians were “clearly still experimenting” after years of relying on fake accounts with fictitious content. "They're always experimenting," Darren Linvill said. The Clemson researchers and a group of internet monitors called the dTeam have linked the posts to the Social Design Agency, a company based in Moscow.

The Independent has reached out to Bluesky for comment, but the company told The Times it was an "industrywide problem," adding, "We dedicate significant resources toward detecting and disrupting coordinated inauthentic campaigns."

has Russian disinformation being spread by actual Russian operatives or their useful dupes, including our nice little home here in DU...

We do a good job getting rid of the blatant ones, but the more subtle discouraging or doubt casting posters are more difficult to weed out.

What someone could say to get lefties on Bluesky to support Russia over Ukraine.

Maybe I've just successfully been able to block trumpers there, but I don't see ANY trump supporters or conservatives on Bluesky.

is disseminate obvious fake evidence against Trump, to discredit Trump criticism. I have seen posts claiming to be unredacted pics from the Epstein files showing him with naked young girls (black bars on the pics). These are 1990's vintage off-brand Photoshop fakes, not anything sophisticated with AI. They are trolling for gullible users to re-post the information/photos. The strategy is to get us re-posting fakes to help discredit Trump's critics and provide plausible deniability for his real crimes.

Someone followed me, then DMed me (I specifically state NO DMs) to ask if I supported the Democratic Party. I told them that I don't DM, then unfollowed them.

posting fake pics of Trump with young girls. Yes, I know he is a child rapist, but posting fakes just provides him with plausible deniability. These are coming from new accounts with few followers, and what followers they have are also new accounts.

Its easy to trigger us into believing just about anything negative towards Trump.....because......he's done so many negative things. We all crave for a gotcha moment.

Look how they destroyed Dan Rather for promoting an unsubstantiated letter of Bush going AWOL.

There SHOULD be plenty enough already.

Making a fine mess which would be make it harder to discern truthful info from the deep fakes

This is why stalling on the Files should not be happening
