Trump tariff challenger gets 6-figure refund after Supreme Court ruling

The wine importer who helped defeat President Trump’s tariffs at the Supreme Court has received a six-figure refund, his lawyers said Wednesday, as companies start getting their money back.

The Treasury Department this week began sending funds back to importers, who’ve been waiting since the Supreme Court justices ruled 6-3 in February that Trump couldn’t invoke an emergency law to justify his global trade war.

Victor Schwartz, the CEO of wine importer VOS Selections, was from one of the leading small businesses that took the fight to the Supreme Court and won. A spokesperson for his legal team told The Hill on Wednesday that Schwartz has received a $110,000 tariff refund in his bank account from the government, saying it was confirmation that refunds are “absolutely starting to flow.”

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had previewed that refunds would start going out this week for importers who’ve successfully signed up. On Tuesday, the agency informed a federal judge that the first batch had been cleared and was sent to the Treasury Department to deliver the payments. CBP says it’s already working to clear $35.46 billion. But the figure is expected to grow, as the government has estimated it collected $166 billion in total deposits that need to be refunded, plus interest.
