Rep. James Clyburn, the lone Democrat representing South Carolina in the House, on Thursday ripped a push among Palmetto State Republicans to redraw their district lines amid pressure from President Trump.
Republicans in the South Carolina state legislature began the process of extending their session to allow for the redrawing of the states congressional map with one goal in mind: eliminating the states only Democratic House district that is occupied by a Democrat, Clyburn said in a series of posts on the social platform X.
Republicans are trying to break apart South Carolinas 6th District. Not because voters demanded it, but because Donald Trump requested it, the lawmaker said, adding that we cannot let them succeed.
Clyburn is the only Democrat among the states seven House lawmakers, representing the majority-Black 6th Congressional District that sprawls around Columbia and Charleston. If the red state moves forward with redrawing its map, Republicans will likely shift to a 7-0 advantage.
