Jeffries leads redistricting effort in New York

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Monday he was devising a plan for redistricting in New York. The effort follows Florida’s decision to pursue new congressional maps and a Voting Rights Act decision from the Supreme Court that could change the math of some states’ districts ahead of the November midterms.

In a statement, Jeffries said he asked Rep. Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) to travel to Albany, N.Y., on Tuesday to meet with state leaders in regard to the redistricting plan.

The Supreme Court’s decision to strike Louisiana’s second majority-Black district makes it more difficult for underrepresented populations to qualify for Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which has enabled groups to force states to draw majority-minority congressional districts for decades.

“The Supreme Court’s Voting Rights Act ruling is the latest civil rights and democratic disaster,” Morelle said in a statement. He said alongside Jeffries that state leaders would explore “every option to protect voters in 2026, 2028, and beyond.”. “We will not allow these efforts to silence communities or undermine fair representation. We will fight, we will win, and we will protect the voters’ voice.”
