Trump renews call to 'terminate' filibuster over SAVE America Act impasse

Source: The Hill

04/25/26 3:03 PM ET

President Trump on Saturday renewed his call to “terminate” the filibuster to ensure the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act passes through the Senate as it remains in limbo in the upper chamber.

Not passing the Republican-led bill would lead to “the worst results for a political party in the HISTORY of the United States Senate,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “An Unrecoverable Death Wish!!! Likewise, the FILIBUSTER – TERMINATE IT NOW!!!”

The president has made the SAVE America Act his top legislative priority. The bill would require all voters to show photo ID, request those registering to vote to show proof of citizenship and to require all ballots be counted within 36 hours of Election Day.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) previously dismissed the notion of forcing Democrats to use a talking filibuster to oppose the SAVE America Act, a move that Thune has warned could paralyze the legislative process for weeks — possibly even months. But some Republican senators, like Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), have argued that changing the filibuster would allow for the bill’s passage.

I have given up any worry or concern about the filibuster.

This filibuster crap is just that, repetitive whining. Both parties have had the opportunity to get rid of it but they both have refused because they feel that it could be useful in the future.

I'm totally ok with the Republicans having "the worst results for a political party in the HISTORY of the United States Senate."

If Trump is SO afraid of losing maybe he should stop being a criminal, destroying the country, and destroying our democracy.

But terminating the fillibuster would have enormous long term benefits in a post-Trump world.

States will start 2026 primaries in June.

Even if the SAVE Act passes the Senate -- which it will not -- it will be challenged in court, thereby delaying it's application. Meanwhile, the calendar rolls on toward November.

When a new Congress convenes in January 2027, everything that did not pass in 2026 is dead and must start all over. No way Democrats will pass a new SAVE Act out of the House in 2027 or '28. It's dead.

Trump will try to interfere in elections with (1) executive orders, (2) DOJ decrees, and (3) Red state election officials, all of which will be tied up in court.

We just may survive to November. Of course, after the election there will be Republican bitching and moaning and court challenges but I'm getting a bit optimistic that we just may hold on and overcome.

And when a Democrat takes over in January 2029, s/he goddam well better appoint junkyard dogs as his Attorney General and FBI Director so on day one we can arrest Trump, Miller, Hegseth, Bondi, Pirro, and a few dozen others -- hold them in jail pending trial. and grab Jared, Eric, and Don Jr. for insider training.
