Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor took a swipe at fellow Justice Brett Kavanaugh at an event on April 7, criticizing her bench-mate for his recent opinion in an immigration case.
Speaking at an event hosted by the University of Kansas School of Law, Bloomberg Law reported Sotomayor spoke about the court's divided decision in September 2025 that allowed the Trump administration to resume indiscriminate immigration-related stops in Los Angeles. The stops sparked widespread protests in California and many people criticized them, saying they were based on racial profiling.
Over the objections of the court's three liberal justices, including Sotomayor's, the court blocked a lower court ruling that said federal agents need to have reasonable suspicion that the person theyre questioning is in the country illegally. I had a colleague in that case who wrote, you know, these are only temporary stops, Sotomayor said, referencing Kavanaugh's concurring opinion, though she did not name him explicitly.
This is from a man whose parents were professionals. And probably doesnt really know any person who works by the hour. Sotomayor added, Those hours that they took you away, nobodys paying that person, she said of those detained. And that makes a difference between a meal for him and his kids that night and maybe just cold supper," Bloomberg Law reported she told the crowd.

This site is the only place I've heard of that comment.
Why isn't someone on the DNC making an issue of this?
Why isn't there more about this on the nightly news - the daily papers (what's left of them) - other 'supporting' organizations.
I feel that we're letting ourselves be drowned by the tsunami of 'Dear Leader's BULLSHIT' and we're so overwhelmed by it all that we figure 'what's the use?'
We need a LEADER to stand up and shout "I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna' take it anymore!!!!"
Really - someone needs to rally the troops!

(170,225 posts)HOWEVER this article was done by USA Today, a newspaper that many many hotels keep in their lobbies and/or provide to guests for free (I know many hotels that I have stayed in around the country had them - at least in the past). So if they are still doing that at those hotels, this would have spread far and wide!
Remember too that much of the discussion is going on in the social media universe, including news and political discussions. USA Today put this out on Xitter -

In September, the justice wrote that Hispanic residents apparent ethnicity could be a relevant factor in federal agents decision to stop them and demand proof of citizenship.

Last Tuesday (12/23/2025), the justice backtracked from his previous position without quite acknowledging the retreat. He did so in a concurrence to the Supreme Courts decision to block President Donald Trumps deployment of the National Guarda case that does not even directly concern Kavanaugh stops. In a footnote, he declared that race and ethnicity could not be considerations when officers make immigration stops or arrests.
