Washington A federal judge in Massachusetts on Wednesday postponed the termination of temporary protected status for Ethiopians living in the U.S., finding the Trump administration unlawfully attempted to end it. In the order, U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy said the Trump administration terminated the designation "without regard for the process delineated by Congress."
Under the Biden administration, thousands of Ethiopian immigrants in the country were granted the status beginning in 2022. The designation allows immigrants to temporarily live and work in the U.S. without fear of deportation because of armed conflict, environmental disasters or other humanitarian emergencies in their home country. The status was extended in 2024.
The Department of Homeland Security announced in December that Ethiopia "no longer met the conditions" for the TPS designation and the protections would terminate on Feb. 13.
"Fundamental to this case and indeed to our constitutional system is the principle that the will of the President does not supersede that of Congress," the judge wrote in Wednesday's order. "Presidential whims do not and cannot supplant agencies' statutory obligations." "Yet, in this case, Defendants have disregarded both that foundational principle and the statutory scheme enacted by Congress," he continued.

(14,422 posts)Some are associated with James Madison University. I have no idea what the others are associated with. There is an Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Dayton, VA, just down the road.
I had an interesting encounter with the Ethiopian Orthodox several years ago when I visited the ROCOR church. At that time, they were both located in the lower level of a building on Harrisonburg's south end in two different auditoriums. I opened the door to one and immediately saw I was in the wrong place when I saw a number of dark faces and people all dressed in white. One lady looked at me curiously and then asked, "You look for Russia? Next door." It still makes me smile when I think about it.

(170,155 posts)every weekend, I listen to (stream) WSVA to hear "In the Garden with Ande Viette" (which he does with his son Mark). I know they talk about the area a lot including Harrisonburg, Fishersville (where their nursery and farm are), Staunton, Bridgewater, etc. I chuckle at the commercials they have on the show (especially the one for Harper's Statuary).

(170,155 posts)My parents used to listen to the local garden shows on the radio here in Philly and then later, my mom listened to the garden show hosted by Ralph Snodsmith (who was broadcasting on WOR in NY for decades). When Snodsmith had a stroke, Mark Viette filled in for him and that's how I got introduced to him (he and his dad were originally from Long Island, NY before moving to VA in the mid-'70s).
Then Snodsmith moved down to VA (I think his daughter was there) and that is when I found the Viette's show (during the time when NBC kept preempting the WOR one that Mark was filling in on by simulcasting Meet The Press with Monkeyboy David Gregory).
I finally found the Viette's show streaming on WSVA (which is on a lower power station too weak for me to pick up directly on the radio, but covers areas closer to south central PA into Lancaster County. Then I discovered I actually had one of their books bought year's ago - "The Mid-Atlantic Gardener's Guide".
Listening to the show, I hear all about that Rockingham Rocking R Ace Hardware a lot and the other Ace hardwares there in the area (who sponsor the show).
