A member of Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemers security team who figured prominently in an internal investigation that has roiled the agency resigned last week, according to two department officials who granted anonymity to discuss the matter.
Brian Sloan was one of four people placed on leave by DOL as its inspector generals office probes allegations of misconduct by Chavez-DeRemer and her top aides. Sloan was sidelined amid claims that he was involved in a romantic affair with the married Labor secretary.
Chavez-DeRemer has denied wrongdoing, and her attorney has said that she is cooperating with the IGs investigation, led by former GOP Rep. Anthony DEsposito. Sloan did not respond to requests for comment. A DOL spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
The inspector generals investigation has also been examining allegations that Chavez-DeRemer and her top aides drank on the job, violated federal rules regarding taxpayer-funded travel and devised official events to facilitate the Labor secretarys personal plans.
