Violence erupts in Mexico after cartel leader "El Mencho" killed in military operation

Source: CBS News

Violent clashes erupted in parts of western Mexico on Sunday amid a military operation that led to the death of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader, triggering widespread security concerns throughout the region.

Mexican security forces killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as "El Mencho," during an operation in the western state of Jalisco, Mexico's Ministry of Defense said in a statement on X. It said he was wounded during the raid in the town of Tapalpa and died while being flown to Mexico City

Videos circulating on social media showed plumes of smoke billowing over the city of Puerto Vallarta, a major city in Jalisco, and sprinting through the airport of the state's capital in panic.

"They are burning buses, they're shutting down roads, not only in Jalisco, but Michoacan, Colima, Tamaulipas, Guanajuato, and then also Aguas Calientes," Vigil said. "And what they're trying to do is show that they are still a force to be reckoned with, that this was not a lethal blow to them.

because the U.S. is - by far - their biggest customer. They would take a huge hit financially.

You are correct that this wouldn't end cartels completely, though.

Plenty of humans out there will giddily accept the redirected supply, ask for more, and kill cheat or steal to keep getting it. They just don’t know they want yet. That’s how drug trade works.

They’d just switch to dealing in something else illicit, like human beings or something.

Kidnapping for ransom is a growing problem. And the gringos tend to have more money. We have not set foot in Mexico in years, and we live just 10 miles from the border.

I’ve lived in Mexico on and off across my career.
When weed began being legalised in the US, some thought that would be the end of cartels. Very shortsighted.

I’m very sad for my friends and colleagues in GDL- I began my career that and have a deep love for the city, its people and culture. I’m on the fence about a trip to Puebla in April but will likely give it a miss. Tragic, as it’s an amazing country with truly wonderful people
