Labor Department Cancels Release of Much-Anticipated October Jobs Report

Source: MEDIAite

Nov 19th, 2025, 1:05 pm

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics announced Wednesday that it will not publish a jobs report for the month of October.

On Wednesday afternoon, a revision was made on BLS’s website confirming that the employment situation data for October 2025 would not be released. The previously scheduled release date was November 7. In its statement, the BLS appeared to blame the government shutdown for the bureau’s inability to collect household data:

As noted by global market tracker The Kobeissi Letter, this marks the first cancellation of a monthly jobs report since 2013.

11. Actually, for Establishment Data, the October data will be published with the November data
Wed Nov 19, 2025, 03:02 PM

OK, some background -- the monthly Employment Situation report that is published the first Friday of the following month (usually), consists of two parts:

1. The "Current Employment Statistics survey", (CES) also known as the Establishment Survey, is a survey of businesses. From this comes the headline nonfarm payroll jobs numbers. The screenshot in the OP (see below) says it will be published with the November 2025 data.

The November data is usually published the first Friday of December. The Revised news release dates says it will be December 16. So we will see the October establishment data in mid-December (along with the November data) -- whether the October numbers will be broken out, or just part of the November numbers -- who knows.

2. The Household Survey - It is a sample survey of about 60,000 eligible households -- it produces the headline unemployment rate and many other metrics like the labor force participation rate.

We will never see Household Survey numbers for October. This is not new news -- it has been reported for at least a week..

What's new news, at least to me, is that I thought an October jobs report would be published whenever, containing just the Establishment Survey. But now we learn it won't be a separate report, but part of the November report.

Revised news release dates following the 2025 lapse in appropriations
https://www.bls.gov/bls/2025-lapse-revised-release-dates.htm

BLS will not publish an October 2025 Employment Situation news release. Establishment survey data from the Current Employment Statistics survey for October 2025 will be published with the November 2025 data. Household survey data from the Current Population Survey could not be collected for the October 2025 reference period due to a lapse in appropriations. The household survey data is not able to be retroactively collected. The collection period for November 2025 data will be extended for both surveys, and extra processing time will be added.

================================================

While I'm at it, here is the latest payroll data through August (Establishment Survey)
https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/CES0000000001

Monthly increases
https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/CES0000000001?output_view=net_1mth

I set the date range from 2024 to 2025 (the default is 2015 to 2025, both date ranges include thru August 2025) because the latter range -- with the huge pandemic changes in 2020 -- make everything before and after look like tiny squiggles hugging the x axis.

January 2024 - August 2025

These numbers do not include the downward 911,000 jobs revision in the April 1, 2024 thru March 31, 2025 period that was announced in September. They have not, and it's my understanding they never will come up with a month-by-month breakdown . It's an average of 76,000 jobs per month downward. I believe these will show up in the data series in early March 2026, but will have to dig for the articles.

When it does show up in the data series, are they just going to adjust each of the monthly numbers down by 76,000? I don't know.

They do this kind of 12-months revision annually. IIRC, the previous one was something over 500k downward. I could dig in and find out what they did as far as adjusting the data series, if I took the time to find out.

expecting to see before their December 10 rate-setting meeting

Bloomberg, 11/19/25 152 PM CST
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/traders-slash-bets-december-cut-190941316.html

Bond traders all but scrapped their bets on a December interest-rate cut after the government canceled the publication of the October employment report, leaving Federal Reserve officials without a key piece of economic data before their final meeting of the year.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said Wednesday that some October jobs data would be rolled into a report to be published after the Fed’s December decision. The announcement prompted traders to scale back expectations for a quarter-point reduction, with odds now heavily pointing to policymakers keeping the benchmark rate on hold at the 3.75% to 4% range.

. . . Market sentiment had already been shifting toward a greater likelihood of no action at the Dec. 10 meeting, as several Fed officials have urged caution about reducing borrowing costs while inflation remains above the central bank’s 2% target. The updated BLS schedule leaves policymakers — and traders — lacking new evidence of labor market weakness, their justification for rate cuts in September and October.

. . . “We already knew that there wouldn’t be an October unemployment rate but the news that the November data will not get published until after the Fed meeting should be a disappointment for the market,” said Leah Traub, a portfolio manager at Lord Abbett & Co. “This reduces the probability of a cut given the divided FOMC.”

Next Fed rate meeting: Dec 10

So, until today's announcement it was expected we would see both the October payroll jobs numbers and November payroll job numbers on December 5 -- the first Friday of December. (Or sometime before then in the case of the October payroll jobs numbers)

Now we are told that both those will be released December 16 -- AFTER the Fed meeting.

It's long been known we would never see the October unemployment rate number.

It had been expected we would see the November unemployment rate number on December 5. Now it's scheduled for December 16. And by now you guessed it, AFTER the Fed meeting.

. . . The AI data center explosion has set off worries about overbuilding, environmental concerns about water usage, and increased energy prices. And now you can add a steep rise in the cost of important computer components to the list.

It's not just PC buyers who are feeling the sting, either. Everything from smartphones to cars to medical equipment could be impacted by the dearth of memory chips.

According to Reuters, Samsung has increased the prices of some memory by as much as 60%. Enthusiast site PCPartPicker, which tracks the prices of various memory sticks, shows the cost of some memory climbing from $100 to more than $250.

. . .

Some more cheery news from AI world.

18. I used to build my own PCs about 25 years ago as a "side hobby"

including running some "case-less" (just a motherboard, power supply/fans, CPU(s), RAM, disk and/or harddrive, video card) and some were even "headless" (without a video card and/or monitor and I would telnet in to manage it - I have a little Raspberry Pi guy like that right now running my weather station's internal data display web server). The Pi looks like this (put together from a kit) -

I was a member of a SETI@Home team so I had a good little SETI "farm" going, at one point running 10 "machines" (in a case or case-less) of different platforms (including a SparcStation, Alpha Workstation, and a dual-Xeon server, running multiple OSs (including Linux & NetBSD). Was even overclocking a couple of the CPUs (had the thermal paste and fans and stuff for that).

I know during that time, the RAM prices were always fluctuating, with those prices you are quoting approaching that for "X" number of MB of RAM vs GB of RAM ( "GB" was a fantasy ).

There was also a lot of fuss about "Moore's Law" then - where the-then CPU platforms were eventually expected to be "running out of room" for any more transistors... yet here we are today!

19. I am truly impressed. I'm frightened to death to take the case off my desktop tower computer

in order to compressed-air-dust the insides, but it has been necessary about 4 times since I got it in 2011 (I would have "thermal event" shutdowns.

Once I had to do serious (for me) stuff back in 2000 where I replaced a hard drive and added RAM. That went well (surprisingly).

Then about 3 years ago, for my cellphone, Consumer Cellular (CC) sent me a new SIM card, and I dutifully TRIED to install it, but the instructions were horrible. I didn't know what I was supposed to do with the little key device they sent with it.

Eventually, I found something on YouTube about that - that I was supposed to poke it in a little hole, and what it looked like and the surrounding part, I eventually found something that matched my phone. But I broke the "key" poking it in the hole. CC refused to send me another key, but in one phone conversation, they mentioned a straightened paper clip would do.

Tried that, but the straightened paper clip just bent.

Youtube instructions said not to push too hard.

Eventually I found YouTube instructions that said that some older cell phones are hard to eject the SIM card tray because the parts get old and stuck together, and just push hard if necessary. But well, I already tried that and my paperclip just bent instead.

Eventually I took a straightened paperclip and needle nose pliers, and held a few millimeters of the straightened paperclip wire in the grip of the pliers -- a few millimeters of paperclip wire won't bend except under super-force. Anyway that worked -- it ejected the SIM card tray, and the tiny SIM card flew out. Fortunately it landed on the table because I would not have found it in ages if it landed on the carpet.

I put the new SIM card in. Thought it was all OK, but I noticed that the battery was draining kinda rapidly - at the rate of 10% every 3.2 hours on average. I also didn't realize for a couple weeks that I wasn't getting any texts or phone calls (causing one embarrassing incident).

Turns out the new SIM card wasn't registered properly. I tried and failed to resolve that. The website instructions just went in circles - do this, do that, if that doesn't work, back to do this -- an earlier page. No success. So I replaced the new SIM card with the old one.

Eventually, CC threatened to impose a "legacy network surcharge" of $5/month if I didn't replace my SIM. That grew to $10/month. Then they said November 10 or somesuch was the final date and I would be disconnected and blah blah and eventually lose my phone number.

I held off because I was afraid the new SIM card would drain my battery like it did before (making my phone worthless for a day trip - even with an auxiliary battery pack because that takes time to recharge the phone), and once it was registered, I feared there was no going back to the old SIM card.

But because of the imminent disconnection, about 2 weeks ago I finally called (again) about the registration issue. This time I got a real friendly one who did all the work on their end and I didn't have to follow any crappy circular website instructions. Anyway, I'm fine now. The battery drain rate is even a little less than with the old SIM card (needs to be charged about every 3-4 days when not used much)

I know during that time, the RAM prices were always fluctuating, with those prices you are quoting approaching that for "X" number of MB of RAM vs GB of RAM ( "GB" was a fantasy ).

I remember a close relative, a SPITR type (Smartest Person In The Room type - in his own mind), saying way back when in discussing new PC's with a 500 MB HARD DRIVE, that he would NEVER need any more than that.

21. Regarding that SIM issue

My original cell company was Sprint, which was all-digital (no SIM) from the get-go. I had that for almost 21 years before T-Mobile finally bought them up and transitioned to their stuff (and SIMs). And agree, trying to pop that little tray out to insert the almost-microscopic SIM was a bear. Fortunately a few years later, they went to "eSIMs", so no more tiny card.

I remember a close relative, a SPITR type (Smartest Person In The Room type - in his own mind), saying way back when in discussing new PC's with a 500 MB HARD DRIVE, that he would NEVER need any more than that.

I still have my bought-in-1989 Tandy 1000TL (I miss Radio Shack) in a closet on the top shelf. It was an 8086 8 MHz processor, with 640K RAM that I later upgraded to 768K (which was basically a 128K video upgrade), and the unit came with a 3.5" floppy. I added a 5.25" floppy drive, a 30 MB "hard card" (hard drive attached to a card that could go into a PCI slot), and a new VGA video card for a higher-res monitor. It also came with a DOS 3.0 on a chip but I eventually upgraded it to DOS 3.3.

Someone had the below video on one of those -

And down the rabbit hole I have fallen!!
