The Rev. Jesse Jackson is improving and has been moved out of the intensive care unit at a Chicago hospital, his family reported Monday.
Jackson, 84, has been in the ICU at Northwestern Memorial Hospital since Wednesday. He was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy, neurological disorder, in April. He has had the condition for more than a decade, but it was incorrectly diagnosed as Parkinson's disease.
"We believe in the power of prayer, and we are grateful for the overwhelming outreach and prayers of the faithful," Jackson's son Yusef Jackson said in a statement through Jackson's organization, the Rainbow Push Coalition. "Our father is alert and continues to share his vision for churches and pastors to come together and reduce malnutrition during this period. He is enlisting 2,000 churches and pastors to distribute 2,000 baskets of food to feed 4 million families this season."
On Sunday, the family announced that Jackson was not on life support, as some media reports had said.
