FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino responded to allegations made in a recent report that he did not undergo the full background check process typically required for individuals in his role, saying the claim is "a complete fabrication."
In an X post on Saturday night, Bongino addressed the article from the Daily Mail citing reporting from ProPublica, and wrote that it was inaccurate, adding: "Claiming I was hired 'with no background check' is just a lie."
"I held a security clearance, while protecting Democrat and Republican presidents, for over ten years," he wrote. "And all of the background check requirements for my current position as Deputy Director of the FBI have been met. Those are simple facts."
"The Daily Mail article that Deputy Director Bongino is responding to does not represent ProPublicas reporting," a spokesperson for ProPublica told Newsweek in an email on Sunday. When reached by email, the FBI referred Newsweek to the post on X from Bongino.
