Democratic Sen. Murphy says capitulating to end shutdown was 'a mistake'

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said it was "a mistake" for the eight Senate Democrats who broke ranks to make a deal with Republicans to end the government shutdown without an extension on Obamacare subsidies.
"I thought it was a mistake for Democrats to give up what was real political advantage coming off the election that could have allowed us to reduce these premiums? And I thought we had a real shot to get a continuing resolution passed that would have lowered prices for people," Murphy told ABC News' "This Week" co-anchor Jonathan Karl.
With the federal government back open, roughly 42 million people will see their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits returned, but approximately 20 million people will see their health insurance premiums skyrocket due to no compromise on extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies.
Murphy claimed that his party will "lose this democracy" if they continue to allow Republicans to cleave off' Democrats.

(123 posts)Chris Murphy, for recognizing that the we were committed to standing for a principle. for those who chose to capitulate because they said they couldn't continue starving children I say bah humbug! children weren't starving, in fact maybe they ended up with healthier food from all that had been given to make sure folks had food........if the shutdown had lasted through Thanksgiving the airline industry would have insisted the repugs open up. That gang of eight did us NO good and there. is still no reprieve from the health insurances gouging us some more. I'll bet Angus King has an airline company owner as a donor.
Heath Howard from NH should be also lauded for calling out his senator.

(17,176 posts)off message and so has the entire maga-verse.
Ending the shutdown caused the House to be called back into session, Rep Gravajla being sworn in, the Epstein discharge petition getting it's 218th signature and getting a vote on Tuesday and expected to pass with a significant majority.
Trump's advisors are talking about sending him out on the rally trail despite the reality that the more people see and hear Trump, the less they like him. That's how desperate they are.
Rs and Trump are on the defensive about the ACA subsidies and Dems have a good chance to win that battle.
Dems are completely controlling the political and policy discussion now.
None of this would have happened if the shutdown was still on and Dems would start to be being blamed.

(984 posts)Hes a good messenger. Hes consistent in his talking points, which I dont see in enough democrats when theyre speaking to the media. He also doesnt let up when going after Trump.
Were well past a conciliatory tone when speaking about Trump and the republicans party. When republicans and their pundits had something to say, they were uniform in blanketing it across the airways, with little deviation. It sticks.
