Bessent Says Trump's $2,000 Checks Would Need Congressional Vote

Source: msn/Bloomberg

(Bloomberg) -- Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said President Donald Trump’s proposal to send $2,000 “dividend” payments from tariffs to US citizens would require congressional approval.

“We will see,” Bessent said on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures. “We need legislation for that.”

Trump, who has touted the billions raised in US tariff revenue this year, has talked about the checks as public frustration mounts over the cost of living. Speaking to reporters on Air Force One on Friday, Trump said the checks would go out sometime next year to “everybody but the rich.” “It’s a lot of money,” he said. “But we’ve taken in a lot of money from tariffs. The tariffs allow us to give a dividend.” He added that “we’re also going to be reducing debt.”

The plan could cost the US government double what it’s projected to take in for 2025, according to one estimate. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a centrist watchdog group, estimated a preliminary $600 billion cost for the proposal, if the dividends were designed along the lines of government stimulus payments during the Covid pandemic.

I thought you all had completed your "Unitary Executive" coup and Congress was irrelevant. You could go pull out of the Treasury, whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted, and John Roberts would give the okay because the SCOTUS is irrelevant except as a sycophant for your RW policies.

Mr. Bessent is implying that the tariff tax Americans and/or American companies is paying to the Federal Government is going to be a lot more than the $600 billion we would get from the $2,000. paybacks the government is going to give us.
Remember, he says there's going to be deficit reduction coming from the tariff money also.
Granted, they think we're all stupid and see that $2,000. as a wonderful thing. This is just like the billions for farmers that's also going to come from the tariff tax.
First they wreck the economy, and then pay us off to forget what they're doing.
In the meantime, the increased cost of health insurance will eat up that bribe we're going to get pretty quickly.
There's no way this works out to our benefit.
This is just my guess, but I see the costs far outweighing the benefits here....maybe buy 3 or 4 times for a family.

You have to understand that the Trump administration wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't designed to facilitate hundreds of billions of dollars going into their pockets and out further to the ultra rich and big corporations. There's nothing altruistic going on here, and certainly no true desire to "make America great again".
This is just a massive grift; way beyond anything we can imagine.

They give away the shop, break the bank and run away when it's time to pay the bills.

Then Democrats have to be the adults and pass legislation that fixes the situation.

Then Republicans piss and moan that Democrats are restricting corporate freedom and just want to raise taxes to give money to the freeloaders. The very people that Republicans have left high and dry, desperate for food, housing, medical care, education and a living wage.

By giving this administration carte Blanche to bring in a private group, Doge, they may have broken things beyond repair. At the very least, over a decade if not decades.

They absolutely need to tax the billionaires that have been the root of the problem to fix the gov't's financial situation. It will be part of their pennance. We need 2 "Robin Hoods" for President and Vice President and one hell of an A.G. to clean house.
IMHO.

1. As of recent estimates, there are approximately 258 million adults in the United States.

2. $2000 for each 258 million adult persons equals
$516,000,000,000 or a bit more than 1/2 billion dollars

3. The money is not there, not anywhere in the treasury ... every person who would potentially receive that money will be adding to the federal debt and paying for it in higher taxes ... and still have no viable health care if they kill off ACA

He already said that it won't be for those in higher tax brackets. So my guess is it will be for those making less than $200k per year. I'd put it at $150k or less.

Maybe they could have just had a few selectively targeted tariffs that might have improved American industry? Instead this is all an avenue for grift on the part of our Resident in Theivery running this mis-administration.

He is losing support both in congress and the general american public. So he comes out and puts this idea out there telling working class families I feel your pain amd I want to ease your burden. His treasury secretary comes out and says well we will need congress to do this. Now all eyes are on congress. With Trump daring them to vote against it knowing it'll enrage people if congress votes against it. So the Republicans thinking of defeating now get back in line and if the democrats vote no he's counting on midterm backlash.
