Johns Hopkins University eliminating tuition for most students

Johns Hopkins University will be eliminating tuition for undergraduate students from families that make up to $200,000 a year, starting next year, the university announced Thursday.

Thanks to a $1.8 billion donation in 2018 by Michael Bloomberg, an alumnus of the Baltimore university, and continued donations up to $240 million since then, the university will now be tuition-free for qualifying undergraduate students. In a release, the university said students from families that earn up to $100,000 a year will ” receive additional aid to cover tuition, fees, and living expenses,” meaning they can attend the school with zero parental contribution.

For profit education and healthcare are a scam.

I wish the EECS dept at my alma mater (an elite school) had not squeezed at least 25 k if not more (I have the exact figure somewhere) from me. Pretty tacky to defraud a student from a developing country by not bothering at all with mentoring or guidance when you take that kind of money for a graduate degree in EE.

Basically running a trade school like those trashy edtech scams.

I struggled and then switched to the natural sciences being lucky enough to find a cool research project/mentor and lab. I managed to get a PhD though it was not easy. The natural sciences were cool. It’s usually that CS side that the low rent, low quality commercial crap comes from.

Then I got lucky and had a really good postdoc mentor. The lab was also truly awesome - I still remember them with affection. But because I was still lagging. I was always interested in research and higher ed and these two labs which were way more academic and small (not a hyperscaled industrial factory) really fostered what scientific spark (admittedly fledgling at best) I had.

But then I went to one of those sexist and sleazy schools influenced a lot by those trashy tech cos and edtech which wiped out my savings and did a lot of damage. I came back home after that..

My mentor was cool though I disliked the lab overall. It’s a school known for being snooty and dislikable as well as sleazy and tacky. Too much influence again by EECS..all that junk comes from the CS side (which as far as I can tell is now mainly social engineering, social media, those sleazy psych and CS fusion things which are an abomination, crypto etc etc). Cryptography for instance unlike crypto is acceptable as a real field, but so much of that marketplace driven CS stuff is such junk.
And they are blatantly carrying out a coup of every other field because everyone uses a comp so these hogs can stealthily take over all space and they don’t get called out by all these sellouts.

I was reading about this Prof Ryan Williams in Quanta Magazine-he seemed like the respectable type of CS Prof unlike that sleazy, tacky rogue’s gallery out of Google, Facebook and other trashy datamining, Defense contracting garbage factories. I hate those creeps. We have the similar type over here now. They need to be shut down.

It’s a corrupting influence on the hard natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, biophysics), medicine as well as the social sciences and humanities. And they outright neglect sciences like ecology being too stupid and crass to get it.
We need to kick these creeps out of our spaces and shut down deregulated real world experiments that are not acknowledged and cross lines. If they didn’t like the modest amount of regulation Lina Khan was bringing in and went into war mode, it’s time we push back. I have seen it for 14 years and I have had enough of losing rights, space and enduring a coup with craven bystanders. I fight back however “crazy” I sound and this worthless shit is normalized and people refuse to make connections.

I especially liked this:

...that sleazy, tacky rogue’s gallery out of Google, Facebook and other trashy datamining, Defense contracting garbage factories.

Our universities are being systematically dismantled and turned into assembly lines manufacturing cogs for the oligarchy's machines and playthings for the oligarchy's elite.

It was pretty bad. I plan to file a serious complaint against the last school I was at (a Si Valley connected one) to do my part for education. Lina Khan really inspired me.

But I want to shield my mentor and his lab from complaints. He is not a bad person and he has kids. And his wife is a decent woman. To make matters worse, I had an inane spat with a male scientist while I was there. He was not a bad person either and almost certainly has children, a job etc. I don’t want to attack these people.

The institution being a sexist shithole interpreted a dispute along the lines of what constitutes being a sellout (the same stuff we argue about daily here ) as something tacky and creepy. I don’t mean sellout here in a unsophisticated way. I mean : “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

I have a scorched earth attitude towards the tech creeps and get annoyed when other scientists or doctors can’t see it. Especially since by now that is totally justified. That place is run by people whom Marc Andreessen etc admire.

I posted about this sad creep Marc Andreessen here the other day:

https://Democraticunderground.com/?com=thread&info=1&address=100220791833

DUer UpInArms also posted this link to a creepy little profile of Andreessen which captures the kind of bullshit non-industries those shitholes drive (from AI and crypto to this rot juggling and exploiting unshared data. It’s why I post stuff clearly on the open web):

https://archive.ph/Wdi4P

That’s the level of intelligence at that school. These are stupid people with some tech skills (or not). They have far too much power or shallow expertise and know how to game shitty systems which are a cancer on society. I was never a fan of the net anyway. Outside of DU I have only ever used it for entertainment and DU is not social media.

It’s really lowering to human intelligence to have to work anywhere near So Valley. And worse the same parasitic type of humans and networks have made my life hell after I came back to my own country. This is why I am filing complaints both here and against that school.

However, I will leave out those people (my mentor, his wife and that other scientist) from any complaints and it’s entirely on the school if they try their usual rot of trying to pass the buck. I blame the school and its top authorities not random scientists I met. They were decent enough people (if too passive in the face of these horrible tech creeps for my taste). I knew within a month of getting there that I didn’t want to work there. But then these petty conflicts were a nuisance. They would rather people waste their lives in petty interpersonal quarrels than attack the school as a predatory cancer on academia, medicine and society along with their precious meninist technofascists.

I can’t ignore predatory technofascists further and let them carry out a coup of space as if I trust them. In fact I even reluctantly deleted my Substack account for the zillionth time - I like to support this one journalist Yasha Levine I respect and trust, but not via Substack so I’ll just find another way to do it. That’s the nice thing about Current Affairs Magazine or Ed Zitron or DU. It’s direct without a third party piling on. But that’s harder for the things you support then.

And by 2025, I at least can’t afford it. I would really like to keep complaints clear of scientists and doctors I don’t want affected by proximity rather than active collusion with these tech creeps.

But I won’t hold back as far as the school is concerned or where this stuff here was a nuisance to me after I came back because the same lousy data mining and worthless rubbish continued hijacking even one’s street and home.

I am also a medical marijuana user and I support my MJ company, but the last thing I would encourage is a whole lot of parasitic not to mention creepy and sexist third-party drivel piling on to tentative marijuana legalization.

Most states are totally experimenting with tentative MJ legalization while treating users and probably medical MJ companies and doctors like crap. These third parties in AI, data etc are just parasitic. No one needs them to orchestrate any damn thing. The last thing that is anywhere close to either genuine legalization of marijuana or an alternative to a failed narcotics war is shit like that and maybe they think people won’t call them out. I would.

The world is sliding into authoritarianism and woman’s rights are especially embattled:

https://www.salon.com/2025/11/13/donald-trumps-path-to-authoritarian-rule-is-wide-open/

I am not the type of person to passively put up with drivel. Filing serious complaints is serious conflict and stressful. That cannot be grounds for yet another parasitic industry. Influencers etc-that’s not a job. I hate that shit where to be believed women have to lose their anonymity. Or pathetic and creepy real world Capchas as if stalking and harassing women on the streets they live in is acceptable to ensure it’s a human and not a bot come to life as that ass Blake Lemoine might contend.

They really seem to be building something like this fucking awful thing:

https://www.noemamag.com/are-we-accidentally-building-a-planetary-brain/

That would be bad enough. But even worse is a Creep Built Planetary Brain and no. Women’s rights are not that dead and whether it is a sugary narrative of human connection (fuck that shit-get a life) or connection tech (fuck that shit-get a life) just no.

None of it is a real job increasingly. Few real jobs - just more and more space hijacking everyday with fewer and fewer real regulations. And we are supposed to ignore it. It’s parasitic. Unless we want to kiss women’s rights and democracy goodbye (pathetic theatre aside) it cannot go on. The overpopulation and overcrowding of the world doesn’t mean that more and more of my space can be seized for illicit “development” or psychiatric malpractice enabling dispossession.

All this sort of frivolous and stupid rot is tied back to social media and the web (and piggy-backed on top of the problems traditional media/society were full of anyway):
https://time.com/6190225/feminist-industrial-complex-roe-v-wade/

I loathe the term “white feminism”. I call it “internet pseudo feminism”. These tech cos are creepy whether it is creepy, small, indigenous companies or large creepy multinational giants.

Women’s rights especially has lost more and more ground to these invasive creeps.
Some days I feel overwhelmed by the number of enlightenment/democratic or civilized values under attack.

In fact even on the left, I am concerned to see a response to technology and AI start to have this socially conservative tone - like a left version of JD Vance where the solitary, single, childfree female is herself seen as a threat.
Left Pronatalism etc.

I don’t have a problem with atomization or the nuclear family - only with the Thatcherite agenda conflated with merely being asocial.
We are not necessary a social species. That’s a lie overcrowding has forced. Some of us are. Many more of us would be solitary with better education and space to think for ourselves.
There is nothing warm and cuddly about the inability to stand your own society.

In fact I think good riddance to the joint family and mandatory socializing. People who need human or machine contact to be fulfilled should try reading or a nature walk.

It’s this specific version of tech (very social or interactive rather than passive and inert) that I object to and when it leads to more human contact forced on people who like to be left alone it is making society barbaric.

I am more suited for minimal, non-contact solidarity than as a response to tech, a return to old school brainless socialising in person.

Why are people so lonely? I don’t get it. I feel most lonely in human company. I never used to feel lonely with a book. But this encroachment is forcing me to come out with more and more overt threats against our state govt and probably the central govt where they don’t check or worse actively enable this. I like being alone and this is a loathesome nuisance human or machine.

If anything, due to all the past illicit construction this road should be closed off. The only people who have any business being on this street are those who reside here or people like my delivery boys and men who come here on legitimate business. They are invariably these really nice young men with hard jobs.

As for the environment-which from your posts I know you care about Hunter-it has just vanished from the discourse altogether.
