Trump's diss to France, UK and Russia in his Veterans Day speech: 'We're the one that won the wars'

Trumps Veterans Day remarks veered into grievance as he suggested America not her allies should be celebrating victories in both world wars

President Donald Trumps appearance at a ceremony intended to commemorate Americas veterans at Arlington National Cemetery Tuesday devolved into an airing of grievances as the president renewed complaints about this countrys tradition of commemorating those who fought and died in past wars rather than commemorating the wars themselves.
Trump was roughly 10 minutes into his Veterans Day remarks when he told attendees that he would be issuing a proclamation designating the annual holiday to celebrate military service as Victory Day for World Wars I and II.
He recalled how he once observed that France had put on an elaborate celebration to mark the Allied defeat of Nazi Germany which had invaded France in WWII on May 8, with Russia celebrating Victory Day on May 9 to commemorate the 27 million Soviet civilian and military casualties in that conflict.
When I see other countries celebrating Victory Day they were selling celebrating victory day World War II. And I said, we got to have a Victory Day. Nobody even talked about it in our country. But from now on, we're going to be celebrating Victory Day for World War I, for World War II, and frankly, for everything else, he said.

Trump: "Today is not only Veterans Day but it is my proclamation that we are now going to be saying and calling 'Victory Day for World War I.' Victory Day...I was recently at an event and saw that France was celebrating Victory Day, but we didn't...I watched Russia, they were celebrating Victory Day...From now on we're going to be celebrating Victory Day."

(53,291 posts)The casualty numbers do not support the ideas he bloviates. We may have tipped the scale, but we entered WWI late and never fought a naval battle in that war. Or so I have read. The wars were not fought here, they were European and global wars. Russia in particular had heavy casualties in WWII. Rewrite history again before historians tell the truth.

(1,394 posts)and VJ Day (Victory in Japan Day). You don't hear much about them these days, but I remember them vividly from back in the late 50s and 60s. And this proposal from a piece of fecal matter that called soldiers who perished in Europe during WW 2 and are buried there "losers".

(7,050 posts)the individuals' bravery and sacrifice, as a country. Not so much celebrating a war, per se. Wars are supposed to be avoided; that's why we have diplomatic offices and (supposedly) vetted and appropriate diplomats to different regions of the world. I know that's a totally abused and lost art with trump (and most modern republicans) these days. But I will never celebrate a war; I WILL celebrate the lives of those people who were brave enough and strong enough in their ideals to fight a war which, probably, would never have been if not for the rich people supporting it.

(330 posts)While European nations where fighting and dying in the trenches the US sat back watched for more than 2 years. We joined the war late and while our involvement was the deciding factor we did not win the war. The war could have never been won without the sacrifices of England, France and Russia and the others that fought on their side.

(27,826 posts)Veteran's Day is not just about, "celebrating victory," in WWI and WWII. Its about honoring all veterans--including those two wars, the Civil, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan Wars. It also includes black veterans and other minorities, for those that didn't see the thread about the plaques honoring our black veterans being removed on the sly from a U.S. cemetery in Norway recently.

Memorial Day is for those we lost. Raise a toast.
Victory Day glosses over Korea, Vietnam, Beirut, Iraq, Afghanistan, (Venezuela?), etc.
Another slap in our faces over not 'winning' their political conflicts!

He simply and psychologically cannot keep his mind from shattering if others are praised and he cannot pretend to better them.
He should win the Nobel Peace Prize, having stopped so many wars. He should have a Purple Heart (he's always wanted one). He owned NYC's tallest building after 9/11/01. He's won many golf tournaments. He has 34, count'em, 34 felony convictions; which POTUS comes close?!
He seeks not to govern; the very thought is laughable. No, Trump seeks to fill his bottomless pit of superiority complex: to be the richest; to re-name the world; to destroy and re-vamp the White House into Mar-a-Lago; to steal the most, reveal the most, deal the most.
