Senate near deal to reopen government
Source: The Hill
As many as 10 Democratic senators are expected to vote for a bill to reopen the government as soon as Sunday evening or early Monday morning, as a group of moderate Democrats, and even some liberals, are ready to end the 40-day shutdown.
Centrist Democrats and Republican members of the Senate Appropriations Committee were close to reaching a deal last week to reopen the government, but it was delayed by strong pushback from Senate progressives who urged their Democratic colleagues to hold out for a bigger concession on extending enhanced health insurance premium subsidies.
Centrist Democrats such as Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.) and Maggie Hassan (N.H.) wanted to put an end to the shutdown after funding for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits expired on Nov. 1 and traffic problems at airports around the country grew increasingly dire.

(13,125 posts)Republicans will be quick to paint them as unprincipled cowards who caused harm for no reason. And they will never negotiate on extending the ACA subsidies because they see no subsidies as a way to finally kill Obamacare.

Before next November, the scope of what the Rs did will be self-evident.

Enough time to ferret out the fine print preventing a vote on extending the federal assistance in paying health insurance premiums?

As the convicted felon said about Ukraine, the MAGA repubs are out of cards.

(12,091 posts)Highest airline volume of the year. Folks want government back on line. Especially aviation. Loss of ACA will be a critical issue during the midterms. Stick it to the GOPers then. Practicality must enter the equation.

(11,506 posts)People are already being notified that their premiums will go up 1000% or more. Example: $400/month now to $1200/month starting in January.
That's no small thing. Healthy, or healthier, people will just drop it. My child being one of them. They have not renewed their coverage because they just can't afford it but they are in decent good health.
As the pool becomes smaller and higher risk, the costs will go up dramatically until it just collapses under it's own weight.
Not just the ACA but the entire healthcare system.

(27,813 posts)You mean to tell me that they have let this travesty go on for over a month, stressing everybody out, making family finances and healthcare totter, just to cave in anyway?!!
I will have no respect for any of these Dems that cave without getting SNAP and Obamacare on solid ground. It will kill a lot of votes next year. Just imagine the crowing trump will do. Unforgivable!

(19,962 posts)It's the ACA (Obamacare) which they're caving in on and will devastate those like myself relying on it to stay alive.
It's people like me they're betraying, and not in the short term, but for the remainder of my lifetime. Which will be much, much shorter now thanks to this.
