The Trump administration is making $100 million available for existing coal plants to help make them profitable, the Energy Department says. The department said in a press release Friday that it was making the funds available to refurbish and modernize existing coal plants.
Coal use in the U.S. has been declining in recent years since its peak in 2007. In 2023, it made up about 16 percent of U.S. electric power.
However, the Trump administration has sought to bolster coal use, including by ordering a Michigan coal plant to remain open, reducing environmental regulations and providing funding. These projects will help keep Americas coal plants operating and ensure the United States has the reliable and affordable power it needs to keep the lights on and power our future, Energy Secretary Chris Wright said in a written statement .
Its not immediately clear where the $100 million in funding will come from.

More money "found" during a funding lapse, to kill more people rather than help people stay alive.

(8,871 posts)my late husband's decision 20 years ago when it was time to replace our home's original oil furnace - to coal. That is, the heat pump and electric furnace I installed are actually powered by coal generated electricity from Warren Buffet's mines in Montana. Not a fan of natural gas, and a little nervous about relying on solar energy in the Pacific Northwest, and not given a choice in electric power companies. Mais, c'est la guerre.

not going back. Gas although a huge contributor of greenhouse gases is cheaper, cleaner,
much easier to use, and doesnt produce the tons of left over toxic by products as coal.
