Walmart Set To Lose Billions From SNAP Benefits Stopping in November

Walmart could see a significant decline in consumer spending if the government suspends Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits as a result of the ongoing shutdown.
According to a June report from the market research data firm Numerator, Walmart accounts for roughly a quarter (24 percent) of SNAP shoppers total spending.
Given the estimated $100 billion spent by the government on the program annuallyroughly $8.3 billion monthlythis would imply a loss of about $2 billion for Walmart if the benefits are withheld for the entire month of November. Newsweek has contacted Walmart through its website for comment.
Why It Matters
Now in its 27th day, the government shutdown that began on October 1 over expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies is now the second longest in U.S. history. Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits are continuing despite the lapse in funding, but the suspension of SNAP payments is expected to significantly impact the more than 40 million Americans who rely on the program.

(23,757 posts)Is a win / win / win program with a substantial multiplier effect
.
Individuals are helped, communities are helped, stores/businesses are helped, farmers are helped
.
There is really no downside to the SNAP program
. The republicans are playing a very cruel game

(1,371 posts)A 2020 U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report found that an estimated 14,500 Walmart employees in nine states were receiving SNAP benefits,
So they benefit from snap on both sides of the equation.

I did put quotes around it. Maybe should've put "MAGA:"

If all that needs to be done is take money out of politics, Republicans would become a normal political party and compromise with Democrats to govern? No. Power, ideology, when the brakes have failed going downhill, other things as well.

(55,798 posts)So $60 million profit lost, not $2 billion.
Moreover, that $2 billion figure assumes snap recipients will cut their Walmart spending exactly correlated with the flow of snap funds.
In reality, some will continue to shop at Walmart and cut back elsewhere (food before rent) and some of the spending would be covered later once the snap payments are restored (to some extent people will catch up on the spending they missed -- so the interruption may only affect timing, not total spending at Walmart)

(28,593 posts)He lives in the UK and he's just out of school (where he majored in politics and international relations... not economics) - so we should cut him some slack. But this is oversimplified beyond much value.
As you say - can he just asssume that SNAP recipients will stop buying food? The expectation is that recipients will be reimbursed the full amount once the government reopens. And what about the $6Billion/month that gets spent at other grocery stores? What if those SNAP recipients choose to offset their pain by shopping at cheaper stores (actually driving business TO walmart)?
And some states are covering SNAP payments (at least at first) when the federal taps dry up.
