'No state has struggled more': Residents of 'Trump stronghold' blame him for epic downturn

There is one state that has struggled more than any other with Donald Trump's policies, and its residents are worried, even calling the situation "death by a thousand paper cuts," according to a new report.
The New York Times on Sunday published an article called "In Trump-Friendly Iowa, the Presidents Policies Have Hit Hard," in which the outlet argues that the "state has become a stronghold for President Trump."
"Now, his efforts on trade, energy and immigration are squeezing farmers, disrupting labor and threatening industries," the report states. According to the Times, a lot of the problems Iowans are having stem from the Argentinian bailout to import more foreign meat.
"When President Trump announced a $20 billion bailout for Argentina this month, Larry Ory, 86, a farmer in Earlham, Iowa, could hardly believe it, especially after boatloads of Argentine soybeans began shipping to China, a once-critical customer for Mr. Ory's family," according to the new report. "For Iowans, losing Chinas soybean market in the presidents trade war was only one of many economic shocks that have hit the state since the start of Mr. Trumps second term.

Hopefully, now they will vote non-MAGA.
RockRaven
(18,430 posts)so it isn't even a case of warnings. Trump literally did exactly this thing exactly this way the first time around. And then soybean farmers voted for him twice more (and counting).
What I am trying to say is: Don't get your hopes up about them voting non-MAGA.

All anyone had to do was listen, really listen, to what he was saying during the campaign. So now, those who voted for Trump are crying because they didn't think it would really happen - or they didn't think it would happen to them.
OR, they just didn't think! 🤔

(3,744 posts)Iowa was once home to one of the best public school systems in the USA. The schools were well funded and for decades were scored among the highest on NAEP, ACT/SAT, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, etc.
TBH, the one good thing about moving here was better schools than any school district I could afford to live in when I was in Ohio.
but in the dozen or so years that I have lived here, the republican supermajority has moved Iowa from the pinnacle of education to funding students at rates lower than the deep south. They have sought to privatize and use vouchers to allow rich white folks to pull $$ from public schools. They rushed back to in-person schooling as a loyalty message to Mango Mussolini and Iowa had one of the highest death per capita rates during covid as kids brought it home and killed their grandparents.
They refuse to regulate how much pig feces goes into the watershed, because farmers (meaning large corporate collectives who have ruined the environment). The largest non-farming industry in the state is green energy and they keep electing people who are trying to kill it.
Zero sympathy for these idiots. I know it is going to make my life worse as well. But they voted for this.
Doodles
(118 posts)All of that is absolutely correct. As a teacher for 35 years I can attest to the education falling off a cliff. Very very sad. Also, hog farms destroyed small rural towns and small farms like my parents in western Iowa. They were surrounded by those horrible noxious behemoths. Its always about money.
