John Bolton, the former national security adviser to Donald Trump who has since become one of the US president’s biggest Republican critics, surrendered to the authorities on Friday to face criminal charges that he mishandled classified information. He was expected to make an initial appearance in court later in the day.

The justice department filed federal charges against Bolton in federal court in Maryland on Thursday, accusing him of transmitting and retaining highly classified information under the Espionage Act.

The 18-count indictment was handed up by a grand jury in federal district court in Maryland on Thursday. Bolton has been charged with sending diary entries to two unnamed individuals about his day-to-day activities when he was national security adviser, many of which contained highly classified information.

The indictment marked the third time in recent weeks the justice department has secured criminal charges against one of Trump’s critics. In response to a question about the charges, Trump told reporters on Thursday that he was not aware of them but that Bolton was a “bad guy”.

Do they put him in jail, or is it just administrative stuff and then he goes home?

Just us serfs and peasants end up in jail before the trial when we can't afford the bond. You just buy yourself out of jail.

Much like when pedo Trump surrendered for his numerous convictions of fraud.

I know nothing about courts, except that they work differently for the connected.

(they do the fingerprints and mugshots and bail stuff - he'll be released, either for some X amount for bail or on his own recognizance, although Bondi might go full Bondi and Pirro combined and consider him a "flight risk" )

Never liked the guy, but it is so obviously retaliation that I hope he skates easily. I hate that such vindictive legal actions can impoverish people regardless of the outcome.

Methinks he lies.

He uses a specific tone of voice and look on his face when he says it.

-- I don't know anything about it

-- I'm not aware of it but I'll look into it

-- No, I haven't heard about that

That's their game. Mike Johnson too, doesn't know anything. Hasn't seen ICE agents mistreating people. Give me a fugging break.

to give him a ride to his booking. If anyone deserves it, he does.

Is the shutdown making for less dramatic arrests? Comey nor AG James got wake up arrests either.
