Chuck Schumer gets his preferred candidate, Janet Mills, in crowded Maine Senate race

Source: Politico

Maine Gov. Janet Mills joined her state’s crowded Democratic Senate primary as the establishment favorite on Tuesday, aiming to flip Republican Sen. Susan Collins’ seat in a pivotal midterm year.

Democrats view the seat as one of their top pickup opportunities — the only in a state Kamala Harris won in 2024 — and Mills is among a few top-tier candidates Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer aggressively recruited to run this cycle. But first the term-limited governor must contend with a competitive primary against breakout candidate Graham Platner, an oyster farmer who announced he has more than $3 million in the bank and already received the endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

Maine Beer Company owner Dan Kleban is also running for the nomination and his fundraising figures will be made public Wednesday, when federal filings are released.

In her launch video, Mills highlighted her recent fight with President Donald Trump over transgender sports and accused Collins of enabling him. “I won’t sit idly by while Maine people suffer and politicians like Susan Collins bend the knee as if this were normal,” Mills said.....

Mills, who won her seat by wide margins in her last two races, is 77 years old, making her five years Collins’ senior at a time when Americans are grappling with debates about the age of their politicians. If elected, she would be the oldest first-year senator ever. Platner is 41 and unlikely to leave the race for Mills; Kleban, who is 48, has so far dodged questions about what he would do if Mills jumped in.

Mills is clearly more electable than any other candidate

Maine Gov. Janet Mills’ entrance into the Senate race on Tuesday marks a significant escalation in political firepower aimed at longtime GOP Sen. Susan Collins. We are moving the contest from Lean R -> Toss Up.

Maine Gov. Janet Mills’ entrance into the Senate race on Tuesday marks a significant escalation in political firepower aimed at longtime GOP Sen. Susan Collins, the only Republican senator representing a state carried by then-Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024. For the first time since she was elected in 1996, Collins could face off against a sitting statewide officeholder who, like her, has a proven track record of outperforming the presidential ticket of her party.

Mills, of course, does not have a clear path to the nomination, and there is no guarantee that she will win it. But she is a top-tier recruit in a field that currently lacks a well-known or well-established candidate. And while Collins has defied electoral expectations for decades, the political environment today is more polarized than ever, which makes Collins’ ability to effectively straddle partisan lines more challenging.

As such, we are moving the contest from Lean Republican to Toss Up.

There are several other Democrats in the race, but oyster farmer and first-time political candidate Graham Platner appears to be Mills’ most serious

This 'establishment' bullshit started in 2015. Very often by people who were not Democratics but wanted to take over our party and re-make it in their image.

I'm old enough for the establishment to mean Conservatives upholding White Supremacy and a male dominated society. I'm not changing my definition at 52 just to give the media a horse race to SUPPRESS votes when the candidate that Mainers select doesn't win.

I'm also a big believer in women defining themselves.

Never let anyone tell us who we are. Ever. I hope she pushes back and asks -

Why is Politico so intent on destroying the Democratic Party? How much money did Peter Thiel pay you to write this bullshit.

Fucking maggots.

I received this fundraising text (below) the other day from this political newbie running as a Democrat while trashing a good portion of the party. It's one thing to come to the table with constructive ideas, but he doesn't seem to have any. In his campaign launch video he confesses "I'm not pretending to have all the answers, but I know I'm asking the right questions."

If you gave Platner a list of what each Democrat was doing to fight fascism, I don't know if he would know the names on the list! It's a disappointing start to his campaign for me. At least Janet Mills has a record of standing up to trump. I don't give a ratsass how old she is really.

I'm not from Maine, but I would support Platner for sure in the general and cross my fingers that he'll be as tough on oligarchs as he says he'll be.

Gov. Janet Mills, D-Me., kicked off her campaign for Senate Tuesday, joining a crowded primary field vying to challenge longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins next year.

The two-term governor, who has sparred with President Donald Trump's administration since January, framed her entrance into the race as an effort to check the White House.

"If this President and this Congress were doing things that were even remotely acceptable, I wouldn't be running for the U.S. Senate," Mills said in her announcement video.

"I won't sit idly by while Maine people suffer and politicians like Susan Collins bend the knee as if this were normal," she added.

The Maine Senate race is one of Democrats’ few opportunities to flip a Senate seat and chip away at Republicans’ 53-seat majority next year.

Mills is clear that she has made no promises to Chuck Schumer

Chuck Schumer may hope Maine Gov. Janet Mills wins the Democratic nomination to run against Susan Collins next fall, but Mills is still starting off by keeping her distance from him.

If Mills makes it to the Senate by navigating a tough primary and then beating Collins, she says Schumer will need to prove he’s worth her support to remain Democratic leader.

“Nobody in the state of Maine has asked me about Chuck Schumer. And I’ve actually met with him only once in my life, seven or eight months ago. And I’ve made no promises, no commitments, to anybody running for leadership,” Mills told Semafor in an interview.

“My vote is not guaranteed to Senator Schumer or anybody else; they’ll have to earn it,” she added.

The two-term governor’s decision to run for the Senate seat will no doubt cheer Schumer — and it instantly makes Maine’s campaign into one of the most important in the nation. First Mills will test whether Democrats have changed their electability calculus by taking on a crowded primary field, including 40-year-old oysterman Graham Platner, who opposes Schumer as leader.

And I can tell you if there's any state that doesn't care about your age so long as you can do the work, it's Maine.

I'm in the restaurant business; when I was up there I worked with multiple 70+ year old purveyors, farmers and the like…I honestly had an 81-year old lobsterman. Who was just as energetic and enthusiastic as my then-29-year-old ass.

This will be an interesting primary contest

https://www.bangordailynews.com/2025/10/17/politics/elections/former-maine-lawmaker-resigns-graham-platner-campaign/

The political director for Graham Platner’s U.S. Senate campaign resigned Friday after Platner’s past online posts featuring numerous controversial remarks resurfaced this week.

Former state Rep. Genevieve McDonald of Stonington was one of the most prominent Maine Democrats who joined Platner’s campaign after a buzzy August launch saw the Sullivan oysterman and military veteran draw national attention in addition to big crowds at his town hall-style rallies. She sent her resignation letter exclusively to the Bangor Daily News.

The past week has dealt Platner, 41, the biggest test yet in his nascent campaign, and it coincided with Gov. Janet Mills joining the Democratic primary Tuesday for the chance to take on U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in 2026. McDonald’s exit showed discord among the campaign that includes many progressive strategists from out of state.

CNN first reported Thursday on since-deleted posts Platner made a few years ago on Reddit that included Platner calling rural, white Americans “racist” and “stupid” and describing all police as “bastards.” Other old posts suggested violence is necessary to achieve social change, according to Politico’s reporting.
