Dozens of US flags used for Donald Trumps unprecedented second state visit to the UK last month had to be replaced because the stripes were the wrong shade of red, a government supplier has claimed. The switch of the 66 hand-sewn flags that had been due to be used along the Mall in London and at Windsor Castle cost an estimated £52,800 in public funds.
Nick Farley, the managing director of the Flag Consultancy, which the government contracts for all big ceremonial events, said the US embassy objected to the £800 flags earmarked for the visit. Speaking to the Telegraph, he said: The Americans decided that the red we use, which is called R01, wasnt right for them, and that they wanted a cherry red instead, so we had to buy all new flags for this visit.
He said the switch meant the stars and stripes featured a brighter shade of red than the union flags flown alongside them. Their red is now stronger than the red on the union flag, Farley said. Before a state visit, we have to provide samples and go to the embassies in London to get signoff. Countries find it insulting if we get our colours wrong.
Farley speculated that a sample flag shown to the embassy may have faded slightly due to the sun damage from previous uses including Trumps first state visit in June 2019.

(73,018 posts)im a tetrachrome, and there r 2 shades of red, so close most ppl cant tell the difference. 1 is my fave color and the other is the visual equivalent of fingernails on a blackboard.
those flags r that red. a correct american flag has a carmine red, not a fucking cad red.

One of my eyes sees blues and greens more brightly, and the ther reds and yellows more intensely, if I am out in bright sunlight. I noticed this when I was in elementary school while hanging upside down by my knees from a tree branch.
I don't remember which eye does which, and at 74, I'm not about to repeat the tree stunt to see if I can replicate the experience - .

(73,018 posts)dont recall the exact length of the test, but it was comparing very close colors. at least 50 swatches. passed w flying colors. pun intended.
but i am/was a painter, and yeah, it drives me nuts trying to find the perfect red. esp as they r very hard to tell in fluorescent light. drives me nuts in the thrift store, too. its the diff btn a yellow based red and a blue based red, a dividing line on the color wheel. so the blue light can fool even me.
my youngest is apparently a chimera. among other weirdness, shes a tetrachrome in 1 eye, and almost color blind in the other. also her thumbs dont match.

(we had that in the lab

My mom used to paint (oils) as a hobby while we were little. She had a wood storage box of Grumbacher oils and a big easel (with wheels), plus a bunch of stretched blank canvases (different sizes) that were ready for use. She took some lessons in palate knife painting from a neighbor. I was always fascinated at her ability to use color (not just painting but also with flower arrangements and display of the seasonal decorations that she would buy and pull out of the closet throughout the year). She used to complain about not being able to capture "perspectives" (like 3-D dimensions, etc) though, something that my dad was good at.

(27,827 posts)...over the past 5 years. Started out as a customer. One of the first times I was in his shop, I was admiring a rug new to his collection. He was writing a description of it, and was puzzling over what to call the predominant shade of red in the design. I said that it looked like pomegranate seeds. He immediately decided to use that term, and explained that pomegranate juice was one of the natural substances used to dye the yarns from which some rugs are woven.
He has since often asked for my ideas on what color names to use in his write ups, which I find very flattering. I have the giant size box of Crayola crayons and a big box of their colored pencils that I take with me to his shop when he calls on me to help choose color names. It's an entertaining challenge, and something totally different from my long peds NP career.
