Millions Could Lose Housing Aid Under Trump Plan
Source: ProPublica
Some 4 million people could lose federal housing assistance under new plans from the Trump administration, according to experts who reviewed drafts of two unpublished rules obtained by ProPublica. The rules would pave the way for a host of restrictions long sought by conservatives, including time limits on living in public housing, work requirements for many people receiving federal housing assistance and the stripping of aid from entire families if one member of the household is in the country illegally.
The first Trump administration tried and failed to implement similar policies, and renewed efforts have been in the works since early in the presidents second term. Now, the documents obtained by ProPublica lay out how the administration intends to overhaul major housing programs that serve some of the nations poorest residents, with sweeping reforms that experts and advocates warn will weaken the social safety net amid historically high rents, home prices and homelessness.
These are rules that are going to cause an enormous amount of hardship for millions of people in communities across the country, said Will Fischer, director of housing policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a nonpartisan think tank. Its going to cause people to become homeless, kids to be pulled out of their schools, people to lose their jobs.
...
The push to adopt the rules is part of a broad effort to roll back federal housing programs under the current administration. Trumps budget proposal called for cutting funding for public housing, housing vouchers and other rental assistance by 43%. In March, HUD and the Department of Homeland Security announced a data-sharing agreement targeting so-called mixed-status families, in which some family members are eligible for housing assistance and others are not because they are in the country illegally or have another immigration status that makes them ineligible. More recently, HUD reportedly planned to require all local public housing authorities to identify such families to the federal agency.

(2,544 posts)Running tenants out of public housing would do one of two things, maybe both. The first would create a need to fill vacancies. People would abandon their existing higher cost rentals and move into lower cost units. The second thing is that the fixed costs of building maintenance would necessitate a rate increase for the remaining occupants.
It is my opinion that in either scenario, culling the population or increasing available housing (through eviction), the real estate market would have to take a hit.

The will own most of the housing in the US.

(2,544 posts)Those who would be moving into vacant existing housing would not be building new homes. Construction, materials, home furnishings, appliances, and all the trades involved in new construction would suffer. People that are in subsidized and low-income housing are slow to enter the new housing market, those qualified for home ownership may choose to fill the lower cost available housing rather than build.
The whole thing about driving people into desperation and poverty is a throwback to a pre-vietnam era attitude that 'a good war' will fix the economy and bring back manufacturing. It could be said that this is being done to feed the war machine and stimulate the economy. Republicans value riches more than life.

(2,544 posts)Those who have previously qualified for it will lose their eligibility. The affected properties with fewer tenants will require more public funding that they will not get. The buildings will be sold to investors. Rents will increase. People will have nowhere to turn to. Programs once sponsored by the government will be eliminated. The masses will have limited options and home ownership won't be on the list.

Maybe I'm too pessimistic, but none of

regarding climate change and sustainable

I don't even think the atmosphere will be
the same.

(75,488 posts)Because offhand I cannot think of any drawbacks to the rich if they kill most
of the population. But perhaps there are some I cannot think of.
Make no mistake many of the rich know exactly what is coming down the pike.
This is one reason they are hoarding so much cash and resources.
And culling the herd.
I suspected that is what you thought.
I see your point.
I think I'm changing tack a little. I'm
now looking at what might happen with
evolution.
For this billionaire species to survive, to
get to where they are, they have had to
lose what, so far, makes us human:
empathy, cooperation, love, tolerance, etc.
The people they have to kill off to get to where
they want to go are ones who have retained
their humanity.
Once enough of these are gone... well.. then
I guess you get the rich livng miserably in
their bunkers.
Now if it's just them there, imo, life literally
won't be worth living. But for a different
species, who knows...
Irish_Dem
(75,488 posts)Yes on the one hand, hoarding resources loads on survival.
Which may mean destroying everyone around them.
Those with empathy and cooperation DNA may not survive.
On the other hand, there is merit and survival in banding together
for mutual aid and protection. A tribe is stronger than an individual.
The rich cannot see it. They are so used to having every single need
and want met instantly. They think money will cure every problem
which it usually does in a civilized society.
But if they are isolated in bunkers how do they stop a Hitler invasion?
Or invent a vaccine to stop a pandemic? They are not rich enough
to replicate an entire federal government.
I guess it will be interesting Darwinian experiment.
Most of us may not live to see the results.

(240 posts)This may be counter intuitive but the "billionaires" know exactly what is coming and are currently doing something about it, as only they can. They know full well that reducing the population reduces the planet's climate load and AI replaces workers and that they want fortified enclaves in the mean time. It seems the rubes who they have somehow brainwashed into believing buying gasoline is patriotic are the folk who are unaware of what's coming, and if they do, they are obviously unaware that there is no plan for them to be invited to the enclave, the mother ship, the biodome, whatever.
Irish_Dem
(75,488 posts)There is no downside for the billionaires culling the herd.
It is part of the plan.
