Rural Americans who rely on Head Start worry about its future: 'Without free childcare I couldn't work'

Source: The Guardian

Sun 28 Sep 2025 13.00 EDT

For almost as long as she’s been a mother, Sara Laughlin has known where she could turn for help in Troy, a western Ohio town 20 miles north of Dayton.

For years, the local Head Start program provided stability and care for her oldest son, and it now does the same for her two younger children, twin boys. Head Start was there for Laughlin and her family through tough transitions, including the end of a long relationship. She credits the free federally funded program, housed in a blue building on the edge of this manufacturing hub of 27,000, for allowing her to keep her job as a massage therapist while raising three kids.

“If we had to pay for childcare, I would not be able to work,” Laughlin said. “There’s no way I could do it.” So, Laughlin said, she was “dumbfounded” when she heard this spring that Head Start was targeted for elimination in an early draft of Donald Trump’s budget proposal.

In small towns and rural areas throughout the country, voters like her were key to both of Trump’s election victories. Laughlin was particularly attracted to his campaign promise to eliminate taxes on tips, which she relies on. She couldn’t conceive why cuts to early childhood programs would be on the table. “Out of all the things in this country that we could get rid of, why do you want to attack our children’s learning?” she said.

No one should take these arbitrary and unlawful recessions as "done deals."

He got your vote, and now he no longer needs you.
Your kids were never important to him.
He's very good at giving the illusion of caring, and relies on fools like you to focus on the false belief that he cares.
Actually he does care...he cares about money in his pocket, power he can wield, and control he can assert over each and everyone of us.
And that's it.

They were fine with that but were too buried in his lies to understand that programs like Head Start help black kids, too, and hurting black people would hurt them as well. I despair for a country with voters who can’t recognize lies or gross corruption.

The Republican party has your back. Already regulations are being put in place to make it easier for children to work! And don't worry about having to make the difficult choice between working and staying home to take care of your children. Since government programs that give you money and support to stay home with your children will no longer be available, you will have no choice but to work. Protip: Don't miss any car payments, if things go south for you, your car may be your new home.

they won't be able to home school their children like many do, in order to pump them full of RW propaganda.

And perhaps pro-democracy groups could help them organize.

This is where the REAL push back happens. People in towns across the nation demanding that the people they sent to the U.S. House and U.S. Senate get off their asses and protect the programs that have become vital to their constituents

In re: Head Start, you can start with the fact that investment in early childhood programs doesn't just enable parents to make a living, these programs have been demonstrated to pay dividends that go far beyond the investment long into the future.

ALL people in the USA need a massive reminder that this is THEIR GOVERNMENT to shape. No one should take these arbitrary and unlawful cuts as "done deals."

It makes me want to SCREAM every time I hear cuts reported in a way that basically comes from a position "Nothing anyone can do about this shit."

Well, people can do something. And it is about time that reporters don't just interview people about how this or that unconstitutional rescission effects them. Simply asking "What are you going to do about it" could help get some brains in gear. Merely floating the idea that constituents have power could spark some action.

Hell, even here in Lawrence County, PA, the farmers in New Wilmington and Volant speak constant ill of people living in New Castle, calling New Castle a hellhole full of Democrats.

They vote Republican. . .they get Republican policies. Look at that turd Aaron Bernstine, my turd Marla Brown, and my other turd Michele Brooks in the PA Lege.

I call Marla Brown "taste buds on an asshole" and Michele Brooks "tits on a bull" because they are completely useless as elected representatives.

Look at my Congresscritter in the House. Botox Mike Kelly of "Honest Mike's Used Cars" in Beaver. And that idiot McCormick who ran of office and has been completely missing since.

Rural voters. . .your buyer's remorse falls on deaf ears. Play stupid games. . .win stupid prizes.

But you should all be happy. ICE is getting rid of all them furiners, legality of their stay in the country be damned.
