Schumer says 'we need a serious negotiation' with the GOP to keep government open

Source: NBC News

Sept. 28, 2025, 10:08 AM EDT

WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Sunday that Congress can prevent a government shutdown when money expires this week, but only if Republicans engage in a “serious negotiation.”

In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Schumer told moderator Kristen Welker that he called Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., on Friday to encourage a meeting, which the White House accepted on Saturday evening.

Schumer said reaching a deal “depends on the Republicans.” “We need the meeting. It’s a first step, but only a first step. We need a serious negotiation,” Schumer said. “Now, if the president at this meeting is going to rant and just yell at Democrats and talk about all his alleged grievances and say this, that and the other thing, we won’t get anything done.”

“But my hope is it’ll be a serious negotiation,” he said, adding that he avoided shutdowns as majority leader by negotiating with Republicans. “You don’t do this by one party putting together a completely partisan bill and saying take it or leave it.” He said Trump’s decision to accept the meeting shows that Republicans “feel the heat.”

I believe our position is clear. I also believe we have reached a tipping point.

I’m afraid any little crisis will be the tipping point for martial law and that means elections will not happen and I think that’s a big goal for this administration.

that we've beaten this horse for the last time. It appears to be wait and see for us at this point. Hoping for the best but not trusting anyone.

But the tipping point is almost upon us.
Not so much a tipping point though.

It is more a slow crumble that will lead to worse to come. By design and intent.
The accumulating effect of tariffs, firing federal workers, exiling large parts of an essential labor force, etc - all aimed at destroying the country.

The time to take a stand on the CR was last March, before the Big Ugly Death Bill became law.

Every utterance should be directed at stopping Trump and shaming every Republican member of Congress who enables Trump.

When it's clear that Republicans are in for a year of it, they will back down.

I'm losing faith in establishment dems, Schumer being one of them. "Serioud talk" for him means a strongly worded letter or folding to repubs.

let the children make a mess, and then ask them whose job it is to clean it up, and how they will do it.

Yes, people will be hurt by a shutdown.

But that is a perpetual characteristic of the current administration, and helping them out now won't change that.

A party that has been in opposition for decades and good at interference often isn't good when it is their turn to lead.
Especially if they follow the destructive lead of Mr Orange Meanie in the White House.
