Sen. John Thune digs in on GOP funding bill, accusing Democrats of holding government 'hostage'
Source: NBC News
WASHINGTON A defiant Senate Majority Leader John Thune vowed that Republicans will hold firm on their seven-week funding bill, insisting that the only way to prevent a government shutdown this week is for Democrats to support it.
In an interview that aired Sunday on NBCs Meet the Press, Thune said its totally up to the Democrats whether a shutdown will be avoided. He vowed that there wont be any negotiations on a stopgap bill, likening Democrats to hostage-takers who are hijacking the process to pursue ideological demands.
We need eight Democrats to pass it through the Senate, Thune told "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker, adding: What the Democrats have done here is take the federal government as a hostage and for that matter, by extension, the American people to try and get a whole laundry list of things that they want that special interest groups on the far left are pushing them to accomplish.
He said Republicans wont compromise on the short-term bill, calling it a mechanism to keep pursuing a long-term deal.

(10 posts)Thune talking about "hostages" is rich coming from a party that systematically gutted healthcare, blocked Medicaid expansion, and fought to strip protections for preexisting conditions all while handing billionaires massive tax cuts.
If anyones holding the American people hostage, its the folks who decided corporate profits matter more than insulin prices.
Restore the healthcare funding you gutted, then maybe well talk about "compromise."

(60,569 posts)They have 53 Republicans, so should need only 7.
Also, there is no compromise on issues we care about and this follows Trump taking back money actually approved

(11,888 posts)It's about refusing to be accomplices in the biggest cuts to Medicaid in U.S. history.
It's about refusing to be accomplices to increasing healthcare premiums for 75 million Americans by an average of 75%.
It's about refusing to be accomplices to the Republican Congress's cowardly refusal to DO THEIR DUTY and demand that Trump stop breaking his oath of office and carry out the laws passed by Congress.
