OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) The Canadian Union of Postal Workers went on strike Thursday after the government announced door-to-door mail delivery would end for nearly all households within the next decade.
Canada Post said the strike will mean mail and parcels will not be processed or delivered for the duration of the strike and no new items will be accepted.
Canada Posts operations will shut down during a national strike, affecting millions of Canadians and businesses across the country, the mail service said.
Procurement Minister Joël Lightbound earlier announced sweeping changes aimed at shoring up Canada Posts finances in response to a decline in letter mail and the government corporations small share of the parcel market. The changes include more community mailboxes and slower delivery times.

What about house bound folks or those who depend on mail service for their prescriptions?

(6,728 posts).... But the announcement said "for nearly all households", not all households. In any event, prescriptions can be handled like "rural electrification" and other sorts of subsidies and exemptions in the case of market failure.
Over all this is a great idea. First class mail is sooooo yesterday.
