FDA initiates label change on Tylenol to warn of autism

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Monday it has begun the process of changing the labeling on acetaminophen to suggest that it may cause autism and ADHD in children whose mothers took the common pain reliever while pregnant.
The announcement followed President Trumps announcement from the White House in which he repeatedly told pregnant women, Dont take Tylenol. Fight like hell not to take it, said Trump.
Acetaminophen, commonly sold as Tylenol, has been available in the U.S. as an over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer for decades. It is one of the few easily available options for pregnant women seeking pain relief. This new guidance from the Trump administration flies in the face of what numerous medical societies and organizations say reflects the current science.
In more than two decades of research on the use of acetaminophen in pregnancy, not a single reputable study has successfully concluded that the use of acetaminophen in any trimester of pregnancy causes neurodevelopmental disorders in children, Steven Fleischman, president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), said in a statement Monday.

(160,763 posts)which made Tylenol as part of J&J's original consumer division (I had even interviewed with them back in the day out of college for a chemist job as their plant is about 6 miles from where I live).
They have gone through several reorgs/corporate moves over the past 40 or so years and the plant was shut down for some time in the early-mid 2000s due to many recalls and other trials and tribulations with the manufacturing and testing (and I won't even get into the product tampering from back in the '80s), etc., but eventually reopened about a decade ago (having been under an extended consent decree). After the spin-off, they are still manufacturing Tylenol (name brand) and other OTC products in Ft. Washington, PA (and other places).
During the 20232024 election cycle, J&J PAC donations to federal candidates showed a slightly greater share going to Republican candidates.
Total contributions: Nearly $500,000 was given to candidates during 2023 and 2024.
Recipient breakdown:
House candidates: The PAC's contributions were divided with 52.15% going to Republicans and 47.85% to Democrats.
The J&J PAC's contributions in the 20212022 cycle were almost evenly split between the two major parties.
Total contributions: The PAC spent more than $1.15 million and raised over $1.22 million.
Recipient breakdown:
Federal candidates: A total of $539,500 was contributed to federal candidates.
Partisan split: 50.97% of those contributions went to Republicans, while 49.03% went to Democrats.

But the ramifications here are immense if they target that one active ingredient, which is in a billion "combo" products (in addition to "standalone" products). I.e., it's not just tablets, capsules, gelcaps. dissolvable strips, or caplets, but in syrups like cough medicine, in combo with all kinds of other active (and inactive) ingredients!

I think they (and every other "non-tech" corporate entity in the U.S.) are in a "deer-in-headlights" situation, not knowing how to proceed. And this is especially during a time when there are quacks running the health agencies that can make or break their bottom lines in an instant (and they have already had them "broken" with their full-on assault on vaccines - something that they really never wanted to make in the first place as they consider them "loss leaders", although COVID changed their minds - at least for the moment).
