'MAGA is a cult': Observers slam Charlie Kirk memorial as 'weird and embarrassing

Political commentators and analysts on Sunday slammed the MAGA-led memorial service for slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kirk was killed almost two weeks ago when he was struck by a single bullet while speaking at a Utah university campus, while giving a speech. His death has become a political flashpoint, with conservatives seeking to lionize Kirk while some Democrats have criticized some of Kirk's ideas.
A memorial service for Kirk was held in his hometown of Glendale, Arizona, on Sunday. It was attended by multiple high-profile MAGA members like President Donald Trump, his son Donald Jr., and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Several left-wing commentators and analysts responded to the memorial service on social media. "MAGA is a cult," left-wing analyst Wajahat Ali posted on Bluesky. "Normies around the world, the majority, rightfully look at them as unhinged. We have the numbers. Don't bow down or be silenced. Also, don't make Charlie Kirk into a saint. Use your free speech to accurately call out his life that was lived in hate."
"Thing about this is that Charlie Kirk *was* a racist transphobic neonazi creep," podcaster Andrew Hickey posted on Bluesky. "Also misogynist and antisemitic. He was pure distilled hatred and evil. It's bad that he was shot, but that doesn't mean he was any less of a monster."

(53,192 posts)nothing of consequence happened because of it.
I'm talking about Huey Long. The "Chicken in Every Pot" and "Every Man is a King" guy.
He was popular in the media and in politics. "Share the Wealth".
FDR was justly concerned about Long's influence and competition politically. Long was bigger than Louisana.
On September 8, 1935, Long was in the State Capitol in Baton Rouge for a special session of the Louisiana legislature, pushing through a number of bills including a measure to gerrymander opponent Judge Benjamin Pavy out of his job. Pavy's son-in-law shot him dead in 1935. An estimated 200,000 mourners flocked to Baton Rouge to pay their respects.
After Long's assassination, nationally, his Share Our Wealth societies dwindled following the re-election of President Franklin Roosevelt.
I can't see how Charlie Kirk's assassination has more resonance than Long's. Because of social media? Better messaging? Long had a theoretical chance at the presidency. Kirk was a mere influencer.

(1,142 posts)MAGA policies such as unconditional support for Israeli actions in Gaza. Look how quickly Ben Shapiro
"took up the mantle"...
I would take a dozen Charlie Kirks over a single Ben Shapiro. While extremely limited in this, Kirk could modify his views somewhat when presented with overwhelming facts. Mr. Shapiro is pure idealogue, imo, who has not the slightest concern over right and wrong. This is not a defence of Kirk's positions -- many of which I found quite repugnant and the rest disagreed with.

Kirk was cut from the same cloth as Rockwell. He had little in common with Huey Long.

(2,340 posts)The Wallace "movement" was, along with the yammering by the paranoid Birchers, instrumental in the rightward shift in the GOP. There was a time when the GOP was actually a big tent, with lots of rational people.
Hard to believe, I know.

Way more rational republicans then.

(2,340 posts)Not even close. Kirk has everything in common with GLR, from the latter's going to college campuses to debate and recruit to winding up dead by gunshot.
Their philosophy was identical.
It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Kirk's backers in TPUSA actually read up on Rockwell. The similarities are uncanny.
It is only because of Trump that KKK, Aryan Nations b.s. has threatened to become mainstream GOP.

Most never heard of Kirk before he was killed, including many on the right.

(2,340 posts)The term is being misused by the media to describe those who are members of the radical right. They are doing so to hide the real nature of these groups or individuals.
Charlie Kirk was Aryan Nations with rich peoples backing.

Then, they left all their water bottles, lawn chairs, backpacks, American flags, etc. all over the stadium grounds for someone else to clean up.

(965 posts)I did not watch it.
I read reports and it sounded crazy.
RFK Jr comparing Kirk to Jesus Christ.
Trump gave one of the craziest eulogies ever.
Perhaps he should not have been invited to speak.
With his narcissism, it had to eventually be about him not Kirk.
Trump gave some preview announcement about autism.
Some think that RFK Jr will link Tylenol taken by pregnant women to autism.
There is no scientific evidence for this link.
Is this another shakedown or will makers of Tylenol sue the administration?
I guess no news reporter will ask about his 'hate' eulogy.

(7,259 posts)How he lived his life - not well - and how many well meaning friends he had, or how many people he influenced in a positive way - zero - isn't relevant.
What is totally insane, unacceptable, WTF generating, is the MAGA events following his murder.
The rest of the world now no longer wonders about the collective sanity of the US. They know.
