Trump warns Afghanistan of 'bad things' if Bagram Air Base not returned to US

President Trump on Saturday threatened the Taliban government of Afghanistan, saying bad things are going to happen if it does not give Bagram Air Base back to the United States.
If Afghanistan doesnt give Bagram Airbase back to those that built it, the United States of America, BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN!!!, Trump wrote on Truth Social, signing his name to the end of the post.
Trump just days ago said the United States wanted to wrest back control of Bagram Air Base.
During a joint press conference in Great Britain with that countrys prime minister, Trump said the U.S. was trying to get it back because the Taliban needed things from the United States. He also said the bases proximity to China was a reason why his administration wanted it back.

(170,297 posts)The president says he wants to reclaim a former U.S. base in Afghanistan. The Taliban apparently has different ideas.
As Trump talks about reclaiming a former U.S. base in Afghanistan, spare a thought for the voters who convinced themselves that Trump was the candidate of foreign policy restraint and isolationism.

Years later, Trump is back in the White House, and hes still talking about going back into Afghanistan. NBC News reported:
Trump said that the U.S. was trying to get back Bagram Airbase, a former U.S. military base in Afghanistan. He did not provide details or what it would mean for U.S. troops, who left Afghanistan in 2021 during a widely criticized withdrawal.
Speaking to reporters at an event in England, Trump said of Bagram, Were trying to get it back, by the way. OK, that could be a little breaking news. Were trying to get it back, because they need things from us. We want that base back.
He didnt appear to be kidding.
Trump: Bagram, one of the biggest air bases, we gave to them for nothing. We are trying to get it back, that could be breaking news. They need things from us.
— Acyn (@acyn.bsky.social) 2025-09-18T18:55:57.993Z
The Taliban, for what its worth, made clear soon after that its not willing to return the base to American control, and its difficult to imagine the White House changing Taliban leaders minds.
.....Five years later, however, Trump has launched deadly military strikes on civilian boats in international waters. And launched preemptive military strikes on targets in Iran. And initiated a bombing campaign in Yemen. And announced his desire to annex Canada, Greenland, the Panama Canal and the Gaza Strip. And directed the Pentagon to target drug cartels in Mexico.
And is now once again focusing on Afghanistan.
If you voted for Trump because you expected restraint on foreign policy and the use of military force abroad, I have some awful news for you.

(113,955 posts)Too many stupid things are blowing up in his stupid, piggy face right now and he needs distractions, so he's lobbing ultra high priced weapons at Venezuelan speed boats, threatening everybody but Russia and his good buddy Putin with war, and now going back on something he specifically negotiated away in his first term in order to get us out of Afghanistan after 20 years of deadly futility.
Nobody wants hat base back. Afghanistan will be just as much of a mess for the Chinese as it was for the collective west, Xi's reach is vastly outpacing his grasp. A base there is just not that important, AFAIK, other countries in the region filling the gap because Iran scares the hell out of them. It's why we turned it over to the Taliban in the first place.
So I'm seeing this, the attack on Venezuelan drug courier boats, the sabre rattling at India, and all the other stupidly incoherent rantings that pass for foreign policy these days as just so much hot air, meant to distract people away from what really has his diapers in a wad.

Trump on Saturday renewed his call to reestablish a U.S. presence at Bagram, even saying were talking now to Afghanistan about the matter. He did not offer further details about the purported conversations. Asked by a reporter if hed consider deploying U.S. troops to take the base, Trump demurred.
We wont talk about that, Trump said. We want it back, and we want it back right away. If they dont do it, youre going to find out what Im going to do.
On Sunday, chief Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid rejected Trumps assertions and urged the U.S. to adopt a policy of realism and rationality.
