Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) has been named the top Democrat on the new select subcommittee to investigate the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, according to a Monday statement from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).

“I am pleased to appoint Congressman Eric Swalwell to serve as Ranking Member,” Jeffries said in the statement. “As the proud son of a cop, highly accomplished former prosecutor and skilled legislator experienced in holding powerful Washington politicians accountable, Rep. Swalwell will relentlessly ensure that the American people never forget who was responsible for the events of January 6th,” he added.

Last Wednesday, House Republicans voted to authorize a select subcommittee to investigate the Jan. 6 attack and possibly the prior Democratic-run Jan. 6 committee, an action that came more than seven months after the panel was first announced.

The subcommittee is part of the House Judiciary Committee and is chaired by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.). In previous Congresses, Loudermilk has probed Capitol security posture and the activities of the prior Democratic-led committee.

1. Here's the rest of the Democrats on the panel... but if trump tells him to, Johnson just might veto them.

...The original select panel was formed by Democrats in the immediate aftermath of the Capitol attack... Speaker Nancy Pelosi vetoed two of then-Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s selections for the committee, which in turn prompted McCarthy to withdraw GOP participation altogether. One Republican not recommended by McCarthy, Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, later joined as vice chair.

Just as the Republican lawmakers Pelosi rejected were known as conservative firebrands, the three lawmakers Jeffries has selected are known as outspoken progressive messengers on the Hill and prominent critics of President Donald Trump. Republicans could cite Pelosi’s precedent in rejecting Jeffries’ slate of picks...

The new panel will operate under the House Judiciary Committee and will be chaired by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), who has said he intends to create his own report on the events at the Capitol on Jan. 6. Loudermilk told reporters later Monday that he didn’t believe Johnson should veto Jeffries’ picks...

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), as ranking member of Judiciary, will also an ex officio member of the panel
