A downturn in international travel to the U.S. may last beyond summer, experts warn

Source: ABC News/AP

LAS VEGAS -- For a few hopeful weeks this summer, a bright billboard on the major highway linking Toronto to New York greeted Canadian drivers with a simple message: "Buffalo Loves Canada.” The marketing campaign, which included a $500 gift card giveaway, was meant to show Buffalo's northern neighbors they were welcome, wanted and missed.

At first, it seemed like it might work, said Patrick Kaler, CEO of the local tourism organization Visit Buffalo Niagara. More than 1,000 people entered the giveaway. But by the end of July, it was clear the city's reliable summer wave of Canadian visitors would not arrive this year.

Buffalo’s struggle reflects a broader downturn in international tourism to the U.S. that travel analysts warn could persist well into the future. From northern border towns to major hot spots like Las Vegas and Los Angeles, popular travel destinations reported hosting fewer foreign visitors this summer.

Experts and some local officials attribute the trend that first emerged in February to President Donald Trump's return to the White House. They say his tariffs, immigration crackdown and repeated jabs about the U.S. acquiring Canada and Greenland alienated travelers from other parts of the world.

For the foreseeable future. No ONE should be traveling here from abroad.

It is too dangerous.

Crime-wise or Visa-problem wise?

The World Cup is here next Summer. There will be a LOT of foreign visitors.

We have military turned against the citizens.
Most likely a severe health crisis.

I need to see other countries shun us for human rights violations.

We don't deserve to be a World Cup or Olympics host.

We ain't shit.

in general, that won't be true. I could see some muslim countries that qualify having visa problems, and I do believe that some who would have come from europe will forego attending over politics.

the cities that are hosting WC games are by and large blue cities that will welcome the world with open arms.

My husband is a New American (2020).
Had a green card from 1973 to 2020.
I deal with CBP DAILY in my work.

Blue Cities do NOT PROTECT ANYONE. I'm serious. You realize the Meadowlands is in NJ right? Last company I could see it from my office window.

You ever come through CBP in JFK or Newark? Friend did August 30, 2025. Green Card holder since 2005 - Italian Citizen, Business Owner married to an American, two American children. Family came back from dropping his US Citizen son off at Milan U.

He was pulled (a clean record, not even a traffic ticket) for THREE HOURS.

THREE HOURS.

My husband was pulled for THIRTY MINUTES when we flew back from our Honeymoon in Belize because he didn't have his green card (lost while there). That was 2011.

I really applaud your optimism.

I'm not optimistic. It's like people telling Black women that things will be okay - no worries - just focus on Gaza. Meanwhile -we are the ones losing our fucking jobs. Yeah - it's a real 'tee hee' isn't it?

We live in two different countries. I live in AmeriKKKa. You live in America.

But go ahead - I'm glad you have so much faith that there will be NO problems getting from EWR to Secaucus. Those 11 miles comes with a LOT impediment now. For high tax paying high value job creating Green Card Holder Legal Aliens.

Who wants to come here to be hassled and possibly put in unappealable detention by Trump's ICE Gestapo or be harassed by Redhat morons at restaurants for speaking a different language. Plus the national parks are a chaos and the cities are soon to be military occupation zones.

There is nothing of interest here.

The people I know in other countries don't want to risk traveling to the U.S. They don't want their phones pored through, they don't want to be hassled at the border, they don't like Trump, they don't like all these guns.

They're not going to visit the US anytime soon. This will have lasting damage.

ill-mannered border control fuckweasels?

I’ll never forget; a couple of years ago, my brother and I drove to Vancouver, BC for a concert. At the crossing, the Canadian guards were all: “Welcome to Canada! Have a good time, eh?”

Coming back through into the States, the American gorillas bombarded us with: “WHAT WERE YOU DOING IN CANADA?!?!? HOW LONG WERE YOU THERE?!?!? WHAT ARE YOU BRINGING BACK WITH YOU?!?!?…”

Manners, Dude. Manners.

I think we're seeing it here in Tahoe, though nobody's talking about it. Friend works at the casino as a sound tech...said the nightclub and the whole place was DEAD on Friday night (of a holiday weekend). We have all noticed the traffic is less too...
Idk about the restaurants.

It will be interesting to see how it goes when it snows, we usually get lots of Indian and Middle Eastern families here to see the snow. Though skiiers are usually a "richer" crowd.

they are detaining people for extended periods in horrible conditions, incommunicado. They are searching cell phones for the slightest anti-Vance/trump material, and disallowing entry if found. These are concrete actions that nobody wants to experience.

He's ruined tourism, on the verge of empty shelves due to tariffs, shipping traffic was down to a crawl, and ICE loves wearing masks. Oh, and people are afraid to go outdoors because America is now occupied territory.

I'm in NJ. I'm not going ANYWHERE on vacation that isn't bright blue. We scrapped a 4th of July trip to Jekyll Island we made reservations and bought plane tickets for in October of last year since they fill up so quickly.

We pivoted to Provincetown MA. We'd never been and had a wonderful time! And yes - our Maltese was welcome everywhere - just like in Jekyll Island.

We are going back next summer too! My husband is very handsome and was the toast of the town. He must have been hit on 20 times. His head is STILL over inflated from all of the guys that were googly eyed over him.

America has blatantly put out the "Not Welcome" sign.

News flash Republicans: it's a big world. International tourists can take their money and investments elsewhere.

Cry harder Republican tourism and hospitality business owners.

I live abroad but I'm currently in the US visiting family. They're the only reason I step foot on US soil anymore.
My partner will not come over until the immigration situation changes dramatically, and he's not even worried about them looking at his phone or socials.

On a related note, I'm amazed at how weirdly normal everything seems here. And how expensive stuff is (holy crap is it expensive!)
