Trump aides scramble to defend tariffs after bombshell court ruling - and as crucial jobs report looms

Source: The Independent

Monday 01 September 2025 10:24 BST

President Donald Trump and his top officials are scrambling to defend his tariffs after a court ruled against them on Friday. The Full U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit issued a ruling on Friday saying that Trump’s “Liberation Day” reciprocal tariffs were illegally imposed. Trump immediately said he would appeal the ruling.

On Sunday, Trump posted on Truth Social and accused the court of being biased against him.

“Without Tariffs, and all of the TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS we have already taken in, our Country would be completely destroyed, and our military power would be instantly obliterated,” he said. “In a 7 to 4 Opinion, a Radical Left group of judges didn’t care, but one Democrat, Obama appointed, actually voted to save our Country. I would like to thank him for his Courage! He loves and respects the U.S.A.”

Trump’s across-the-board reciprocal tariffs are a cornerstone of his second presidency, despite the fact that many economic experts say that producers and foreign countries pass the cost of tariffs down to consumers.

As products become more expensive, there's less to spend on more products. So demand plummets and layoffs begin. The whole economy goes into the abyss. Nixon tried wage and price controls. Flop. Why am I not seeing an EO freezing prices immediately?

BTW, are tariffs by EO an official presidential act? If they're ultimately ruled illegal, is immunity a fail? Or are official acts in the declaration and not in the legality?

IIRC, he threatened to do that with pharmaceutical products.

Trump is demanding drugmakers lower prices within 60 days. Pharma experts say it’s unlikely to happen.

We shall see if this becomes another TACO by the end of this month. Have your Bingo cards ready!

Justice matters.

Albeit, it is true once in a while, on matters he should ask good lawyers about.

And it’s coming from Americans. From me, a manufacturer here in the US, barely scraping by. I hope he has to pay back every penny.

IOW, if you don't give me what I want I'll destroy the country and military.

Not that he's not doing it already, but that's just how I see it.

. . . to be bad news for Trump.

He did not fire them all.
He did not fire most of them.
He did not fire many of them.

He fired one person. Their procedures remain in place and are an open book. The data is always reviewed by independent economists.

Please don't shit on good people like that.

There are jobs reports coming Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. They come from at least four sources, only one of which is BLS.

Your post tells me you do not understand those facts.

trump's counsel sent a letter to the court claiming that the United States would become bankrupt and the world would end if trump's tariffs were not affirmed. When trump filed an appeal, the US government promised to refund all tariffs https://www.democraticunderground.com/100220354298 Now trump is claiming that the US government would be bankrupted if these tariffs are refunded.

Some of the arguments being made reminds me of this doomsday letter
