Trump threatens George Soros and 'Radical Left Son' with Diddy-like federal charges over 'violent protests'

Source: The Independent

Donald Trump is demanding that the Department of Justice bring rarely used and hard-to-prove federal racketeering charges against Democratic mega-donor George Soros and his son, Alex — baselessly claiming they support “violent protests.”

The president took to his Truth Social platform on Wednesday to say that the elder Soros and “his wonderful Radical Left son” — who is now running his father’s Open Society Foundation nonprofit — should be charged with violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, a 1970 law providing for extended criminal penalties against participants in ongoing criminal organizations.

“We’re not going to allow these lunatics to rip apart America any more, never giving it so much as a chance to “BREATHE,” and be FREE,” Trump wrote. The president also said the 95-year-old philanthropist “and his group of psychopaths” have somehow “caused great damage to our Country!” He then added: “That includes his Crazy, West Coast friends. Be careful, we’re watching you! Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The post marks the latest bid by the president to gin up criminal cases against his adversaries.

The felon's presumption of kingly privilege is at least as serious now as then.

at the very least for defamation, but I'm sure his lawyers could come up with all kinds of other reasons.

The president called for a progressive donor to be charged with racketeering, following the tyrants’ playbook about how to deal with political opposition.

Donald Trump has spent nearly a decade peddling absurd claims about “paid protesters” — as if anyone who disagrees with him must necessarily be corrupt and inauthentic — and the president kept that push going in an awkwardly worded online statement last week.....

A week later, the president seemed to go into a bit more detail this week. NBC News reported:

Trump said on Truth Social this morning that billionaire philanthropist George Soros and his son Alex Soros should be charged with racketeering. ‘George Soros, and his wonderful Radical Left son, should be charged with RICO because of their support of Violent Protests, and much more, all throughout the United States of America,’ Trump wrote. ... It’s unclear what protests Trump, who has repeatedly attacked the Soros family, was referring to or what prompted his post.

In the same online missive, Trump also wrote, in a message directed at a “friend” of Soros, “Be careful, we’re watching you!”....

I’m reminded of an important observation The New York Times made in March: “Mr. Trump and his allies are aggressively attacking the players and machinery that power the left, taking a series of highly partisan official actions that, if successful, will threaten to hobble Democrats’ ability to compete in elections for years to come.”

The evidence to bolster the point isn’t hard to find. After all, in recent months, the Trump administration has targeted leading Democratic officials the president doesn’t like; it’s also opened an investigation into Media Matters, which came on the heels of Trump directing the Justice Department to investigate ActBlue, the Democratic Party’s most important fundraising platform, all while targeting prominent Democratic supporters.

Now, abandoning subtlety about his authoritarian vision, Trump is calling for a leading progressive donor to be charged with racketeering, based on nothing whatsoever, sticking to the tyrants’ playbook about how to deal with political opposition.

Back in 2018, a good friend ran for District Attorney in my county. Another good friend helped him go through the interview process with a Soros affiliated group to get funding. It took three or four meetings but my friend was funded by the Soros affiliate and won.

I expect to see a nasty fight this cycle with Soros coming up.

When Main Justice directs U.S. attorney’s offices to launch what amounts to a fishing expedition against a presidential foe, it’s political corruption.

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/trumps-doj-reportedly-pushes-prosecutors-go-george-soros-foundation-rcna233737

If Donald Trump’s public comments are any indication, the president has been preoccupied with George Soros lately, repeatedly referencing the Hungarian American philanthropist in multiple Fox News appearances.....

The baseless accusations were ridiculous — there’s no evidence whatsoever to suggest the Soros family or the Open Society Foundations have financed “violent protests” — but the remarks were also largely overlooked as pointless presidential palaver. As I noted in a post, Trump’s weird rants against Soros are easy to shrug off unless the Justice Department starts acting on them.

So it’s significant that The New York Times reported a senior Justice Department official has “instructed more than a half dozen U.S. attorneys’ offices to draft plans to investigate” a Soros-backed group. From the article:

The official’s directive, a copy of which was viewed by The New York Times, goes as far as to list possible charges prosecutors could file, ranging from arson to material support of terrorism. The memo suggests department leaders are following orders from the president that specific people or groups be subject to criminal investigation — a major break from decades of past practice meant to insulate the Justice Department from political interference. The move is the latest instance of the Justice Department moving against Mr. Trump’s perceived enemies.

.....When Main Justice directs at least seven U.S. attorney’s offices to launch what amounts to a fishing expedition, that’s not law enforcement, it’s political corruption.

This is obviously an outrageous abuse, but it’s also a familiar one. Indeed, it dovetails to an unsettling degree with Trump and his team’s revenge campaign against former FBI Director James Comey. And New York Attorney General Letitia James. And Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff of California. And former CIA Director John Brennan. And even former President Joe Biden.

The unsubtle and retaliatory weaponization of federal law enforcement is corrupt, brazen and dangerous in equal measure, and the problem is only getting worse.
