President Donald Trump's plan to bully another country into giving up its rare earth minerals appears to have backfired, according to a new report.
The Washington Post reported on Sunday that Trump's previous statements about controlling Greenland for national security seem to have been part of a larger plot to get favored access to the country's rare earth minerals. Greenland has two-thirds of the minerals most crucial to the United States, which are used by technology companies to build their products, according to the report.
One mine is said to have enough minerals to operate for 1,000 years, according to the report. Tony Sage, who owns the professional soccer team in Perth, Australia, told The Post that the mine is a "game-changing rare earth mine for the West.To that end, the Trump administration sent a "letter of interest" to another local mining company offering a $120 million loan to help expand their operations.
However, that plan appears to have backfired as Greenland officials say the country's mining industry doesn't need to grow that quickly. "We dont need to be the greatest mining country in the world," Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenland's mining minister, told The Post. "To run a small country and a small economy like ours, we need a good stable income over time that benefits the people and protects the environment.

I know, wishful thinking.

(566 posts)One of the worst "Big Lies" is that population growth is always good. There are all sorts of qualifiers and I understand they benefit from Denmark's welfare state (a good thing), but Democracies seem to work better at a lower population size where people have common interests.

(14,676 posts)Exactly!
The economic model of this world needs to evolve from the rapacious capitalism that accelerates the conversion of finite resources to pollution, leaving future generations with ravaged lands and catastrophic climate change.
Do we, or do we not, care about our grandchildren? Pro-Life begins not at conception, but with developing a sustainable economy which conserves the resources and environmental ecosystems which support life itself.

(1,911 posts)"In geology, we say what characterizes rare earths is that they are neither rare nor earth. They are a group of metals that are commonly occurring in many rock types, and there are large known deposits of them throughout the world," Rosing explained.
According to Rosing, nothing points to a special concentration of minerals and rare earths in Greenland, and there are many places in the world where minerals are easier and cheaper to obtain, such as in the USA. In the U.S. Geological Survey's overview of known rare earth reserves from 2024, Greenland sits eighth in the table, ranked just behind the US but far behind countries such as China, Vietnam, and Brazil.
