Almost a third of people in Gaza not eating for days, UN food programme warns
Source: BBC
Almost one in three people in Gaza are going days without eating, the UN's food aid programme has warned.
"Malnutrition is surging with 90,000 women and children in urgent need of treatment," the World Food Programme (WFP) said in a statement to news agency AFP.
Israel, which controls the entry of all supplies into Gaza, says there is no restriction on aid getting into the territory and blames Hamas for any malnutrition.
An Israeli security official said on Friday that airdrops of aid into Gaza could be allowed in the coming days - something aid agencies have previously cautioned is an inefficient way to get supplies into Gaza.
On Friday, Germany, France and the UK called on Israel to "immediately lift restrictions on the flow of aid" into the territory.
In a joint statement, they called for an immediate end to the "humanitarian catastrophe that we are witnessing in Gaza," and to the war itself, adding that Israel must "uphold its obligations under international humanitarian law".
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres said he could not "explain the level of indifference and inaction we see by too many in the international community - the lack of compassion, the lack of truth, the lack of humanity".
Addressing the Amnesty International global assembly, he said more than 1,000 Palestinians had been killed while trying to access food since 27 May - when the US and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began distributing supplies as an alternative to the UN-led system.

(51,144 posts)You are using a universal claim:
in an attempt to negate a specific claim made by the other poster (that the Gaza situation is a genocide).
Of course many things are not genocides, but that does not mean that the events in Gaza are not.

BTW there is only one universally accepted definition of genocide, codified in the Genocide Convention.

(32,172 posts)I told you what I definition of genocide that I respect. And where are you getting this "extermination" of two million people? I do remember something about the extermination of six million people. I don't like anti-Semitism, whether it is here on DU or anywhere else.
Go back and review how the Gaza war began. If people at a peaceful music festival had not been massacred, if hostages had not been taken, then no Gazans would have lost their lives. You are on ignore, so don't bother to reply.

(6,099 posts)But the Old Testament beliefs of the Jewish faith say, "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth." The scales of justice have tipped, heavily, weighed down by the lives of other innocents. There is no excuse for exterminating starving people, with gunfire, who are trying to access aid stations because they are dying from hunger and thirst.
How does this end?.

(56,354 posts)including children. They are building an internment camp at Rafah that will hold all 2 million and never allow them to leave. The former PM of Israel Olmert calls it a "concentration camp" designed for "ethnic cleansing." Pretending Oct 7 was the beginning of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict requires willful ignorance. Moreover, Israel is not targeting Hamas. Starvation and concentration camps target civilians, not terrorists. Israel's stated goal is to rid the region of every last Palestinian. The only possible way that anyone wouldn't see this as a genocide is if they don't believe Palestinians are human. What is happening in Gaza is human rights atrocity of historic dimension.

(36,323 posts)'The only possible way that anyone wouldn't see this as a genocide is if they don't believe Palestinians are human.'
Dehumanisation is one of the ten stages of genocide. Members of the Israeli govt have regularly referred to Palestinians as vermin etc. And many supporters of just about everything Israel does deny the existence of Palestinians as a group of people with their own culture and right to self-determination. Air quotes around the word 'Palestinian' is a sign of the denial, and unfortunately happens even here at DU. That exchange might give you some background into what you've read in this thread. The dehumanising of Palestinians also comes across in the tendency to talk about them only as numbers, and then to laser focus in on arguing the accuracy of numbers, and not treat them as individuals. The same people will make a point of putting faces to names of Israelis, and when on rare occassions a killing of a Palestinian is so horrific that it breaks through to the international media, like the murder of Hind Rajab, defenders of Israel quickly swing into action labelling it a hoax and blood libel.
I'm always up for a respectful back and forth with people who disagree with me on genocide unless they're fascists, Nazis or is clearly armed with very little knowledge of genocide and the I/P conflict and have zero interest in learning anything that might conflict with their views. The third is the reason I won't waste my time engaging this time round.

(2,485 posts)There is little doubt that Israels actions are sufficient to meet the requirements for genocidal conduct. More than 57,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Hamass attack of 7 October 2023. A November 2024 study found that nearly 70% of those killed at the time had been women and children, and clearly many male victims were not combatants either. The number of civilians killed thus far exceeds the 8,000 killed by Bosnian Serb forces in Srebrenica in 1995, which an international tribunal found to constitute genocide.

(93 posts)Since 1939, only two countries have done the following to the population of an occupied country that are in their power:
1. Isolate them in a walled and ruined urban ghetto
2. Systematically restrict food and necessities so that the people slowly starve
3. Systematically murder them
The first country was Nazi Germany which is universally condemned.
The second country is Israel, which is getting away with it, with the support of the U.S. government and others.
