Musk ordered shutdown of Starlink satellite service as Ukraine retook territory from Russia

Source: Reuters

July 25, 2025 7:00 AM EDT Updated 8 hours ago

KYIV - During a pivotal push by Ukraine to retake territory from Russia in late September 2022, Elon Musk gave an order that disrupted the counteroffensive and dented Kyiv’s trust in Starlink, the satellite internet service the billionaire provided early in the war to help Ukraine’s military maintain battlefield connectivity.

According to three people familiar with the command, Musk told a senior engineer at the California offices of SpaceX, the Musk venture that controls Starlink, to cut coverage in areas including Kherson, a strategic region north of the Black Sea that Ukraine was trying to reclaim.

“We have to do this,” Michael Nicolls, the Starlink engineer, told colleagues upon receiving the order, one of these people said. Staffers complied, the three people told Reuters, deactivating at least a hundred Starlink terminals, their hexagon-shaped cells going dark on an internal map of the company’s coverage. The move also affected other areas seized by Russia, including some of Donetsk province further east.

Upon Musk’s order, Ukrainian troops suddenly faced a communications blackout, according to a Ukrainian military official, an advisor to the armed forces, and two others who experienced Starlink failure near the front lines. Soldiers panicked, drones surveilling Russian forces went dark, and long-range artillery units, reliant on Starlink to aim their fire, struggled to hit targets. As a result, the Ukrainian military official and the military advisor said, troops failed to surround a Russian position in the town of Beryslav, east of Kherson, the administrative center of the region of the same name. “The encirclement stalled entirely,” said the military official in an interview. “It failed.”

Elon Musk Foments More Geopolitical Controversy With Ukraine Internet Dispute

In mid-September, Ukraine launched a counteroffensive and advanced into territory in the south that was previously occupied by Russia. Ukraine’s army lost access to the Starlink service in some areas near the front lines, three people with knowledge of the matter said. The service has been restored in key places, one of them said.

Days after the Ukrainian counteroffensive began, a Russian delegation to the United Nations suggested that Starlink satellites could become a military target. On Twitter, Mr. Musk insisted that Starlink was for peaceful use only.

Mr. Musk then began promoting his proposed peace plan between Russia and Ukraine. He called on Ukraine to accept Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and agree to new referendums in Russian-occupied Ukraine that would let residents choose who should control those territories. He created a Twitter poll asking if “the will of the people” in occupied areas should decide if they were part of Ukraine or Russia.

Mr. Zelensky posted a Twitter poll of his own, asking, “Which Elon Musk do you like more: one who supports Ukraine, or one who supports Russia?” Mr. Musk countered by tweeting, “I still very much support Ukraine, but am convinced that massive escalation of the war will cause great harm to Ukraine and possibly the world.”

starlink is used by Russia, China, North Korea and other dictatorship countries.

Whoever can pay, gets it.

I hope Ukraine has other resources.

8. Musk helped Russia use Starlink

Musk enabled Starlink terminals being used by Russia when they were suffering huge losses earlier this year.

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-using-thousands-spacex-starlink-terminals-ukraine-wsj-says-2024-02-15/

Feb 15 (Reuters) - Russian troops in Ukraine are using thousands of Starlink satellite communications terminals made by Elon Musk's SpaceX, the Ukrainian military intelligence chief told the Wall Street Journal in an interview published on Thursday.
Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov said that Russian troops have been communicating over the Starlink system "for quite a long time" and acquired the terminals from private Russian firms that purchased them from intermediaries.

Musk has also sold stocks in his companies both Starlink and Space X and tried to hide where the purchases were made by funnelling money through front companies similar to how money launderers buy real estate

How Elon Musk’s SpaceX Secretly Allows Investment From China
As a U.S. military contractor, SpaceX sees allowing Chinese ownership as fraught. But it will allow the investment if it comes through secrecy hubs like the Cayman Islands, court records say. “It is certainly a policy of obfuscation,” an expert said.

Musk should not be trusted to be loyal to the US while he makes deals with Russia and China

This isn't the first time Musk has directly interfered with Ukrainian operations. They would be well justified in mitigating this adversary.

Aiding and abetting the enemy of Democracy. When Russia is getting their ass kicked, these two scumbags step in to muck up the progress of the good guys.

To me, that's grounds to pull their citizenship and deport them!

It puts a private individual in charge of making decisions that affect military and other operations. Trump is doing the same, not only with Musk, but with his tech billionaires who are integrating their AI systems into government agencies, which could be especially dangerous with the military and intelligence services.

He was starting to become unhinged before going blown MAGAt.

I think another dispute was over money. He wanted to be paid by the Pentagon, but cutting off access to Ukraine during an active engagement shows what a piece of shit he is. And his tweet was so disingenuous. I think he had just met with Putin too just before. Maybe the article says. I’ll get to it later.

I’m glad the AP investigated this further.
