Trump orders crackdown on homeless encampments nationwide

WASHINGTON, July 24 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order urging cities and states to clear homeless encampments and move people into treatment centers - a move that advocates for the homeless said would worsen the problem. The order directs Attorney General Pam Bondi to overturn state and federal legal precedents and consent decrees that limit local efforts to remove homeless camps.
It remains unclear how Bondi could unilaterally overturn such decisions. The order follows a Supreme Court decision in 2024 that allows cities to ban homeless camping. The National Coalition for the Homeless condemned the order, saying it would undermine legal protections for homeless and mentally ill individuals. The group said the Trump administration has "a concerning record of disregarding civil rights and due process" and warned that it would worsen the homelessness crisis.
Trump said people living in homeless encampments should be directed to facilities for treatment of mental health problems and addiction. He did not mention any plans to expand treatment centers or provide long-term housing.
About 771,480 people were homeless in the U.S. on a single night in 2024, an 18% increase from the prior year, according to the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness. Of those, about 36% were unsheltered, meaning they were living on the streets, in vehicles, or in encampments, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development's point-in-time count. The National Homelessness Law Center said the order combined with budget cuts for housing and healthcare, will increase homelessness.

I know a child who was stuck in an ER for nearly a week waiting for a bed to open in a mental health facility. And drug treatment centers? What a laugh. I know of a drug addict who was excited to have found a spot opening up in a center several hundred miles away. Unfortunately, he OD'ed before he could get into it.

. the poor, liberals, democrats, teachers and their unions, scientists, environmentalists, students,
and so on will be deported to an ICE prison and international prisons too and people will start dying
from being shot, diseases, hunger, torture, exposure to heat or cold.
ICE now has a budget bigger than the entire Russian military and it will be used on a fascist war
on the American people.

for detention facilities. They have plenty of resources to deal with the problem of homelessness, in their cruel, heartless way.
Not all homeless people have mental health or addiction problems. For some, its a matter of lack of financial resources. Its worrisome that being poor could result in deportation.

(8,290 posts)They no longer exist. The money to support them dried up decades ago, and Trump has essentially gutted all the agencies that could help bring them back.
We're talking about 10's of billions of dollars to re-create them, and billions more each year to maintain them.
As usual, Trump plays king, makes decrees, and expects someone else to do the work.

(6,614 posts)and believe me, I was neither drug addicted nor mentally disabled at the time. What I was.. was just divorced and BROKE. Ex's divorce attorney ran for state senate the following year and won. I'll let you figure who got the best of the deal out of the divorce. grrr Finally managed to get a job (this was in the mid-80's) and make a deal with one apartment complex that would work with me until my first paycheck came in. Until then, daughter and I lived in my Plymouth Horizon in a Best Buy parking lot. And this was what... 40 years ago?
Now we've had inflation, greedflation, a Pandemic, and "depressed economies" for decades at a time... all the while rents and everything else goes sky high. People are forced out of their homes via foreclosures, or sell them any way they can to get money into their hands (and to the other creditors bearing down on them) via the "We Buy Ugly Houses" companies. But the general notion put out there are people are homeless camping because they WANT to... or because they spend all their money on drugs or booze. And ya know what? I wouldn't blame those people buying a bit of drug or booze once in a while to escape the poverty and despair. But that may NOT be what landed them there in the first place! Especially not when you have whole families living hard...
