Republicans plan to use threat of third Trump impeachment as key issue to boost their standing in midterm races

Republican strategists say they plan to make a major midterm talking point from the threat of a third impeachment against Donald Trump that could come if Democrats retake the House.
We know what the stakes are in the midterm elections, John McLaughlin, a Trump pollster, told NBC News. If we dont succeed, Democrats will begin persecuting President Trump again. They would go for impeachment.
Right now, Republicans hold an eight-seat advantage in the House, walling the president off from a third impeachment, but that could change if the Democrats surge in 2026, as the presidents party typically suffers during midterm elections.
Still, according to Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., who led the partys second impeachment against Trump over the January 6 insurrection, the Democrats themselves plan to focus more on what they see as the presidents terrible agenda. Weve already impeached him twice, Raskin told NBC. So obviously thats not a complete solution, given that he is able to beat the two-thirds constitutional spread. So I dont think anybody thinks thats going to be the utopian solution to our problems.

(3,036 posts)in voting to impeach and convict are a matter of, well... record. They are liars.
But there's always that reliable demo of voters who'll be fooled by republicans "just this one more time."
Shame on THEM.

(6,277 posts)The threat of impeachment won't encourage anybody to vote for Republicans that wasn't already going to vote Republican. In fact, it may make many more people more excited to vote for Democrats.

No RW will ever be convicted, barring a complete revision of our electoral system. You could impeach trump every day of this term, and it would have exactly the same effect as doing it zero times.

(2,944 posts)Even if it is not going to succeed because of the criminality of the GOP does not mean we should not do it. His crimes and anti-Constitutional behavior should not be ignored or we will never get our government back.
To ignore a crime is to facilitate the crime.

Democrats should not run away from it as a possibility.
Just make it clear the number of Senate seats needed to remove.
There is nothing wrong with being realistic that the odds are long.
OTOH, people might actually step up and get out to vote who wouldn't otherwise to see if they can flip their Senate seat.
