Embattled MAGA rallies behind Trump after leak of alleged Epstein letter

Source: AXIOS

Tal Axelrod

The MAGA movement finally began to unite on the issue of Jeffrey Epstein Friday, rallying around President Trump — and against "the fake news media" — after the release of a blockbuster Wall Street Journal investigation.

Why it matters: A pair of explosive developments gave MAGA influencers the cover they needed to suspend nearly two weeks of unprecedented infighting over the Trump administration's handling of the Epstein files.

  • First, the Journal's report that Trump sent Epstein a lewd and bizarre birthday card in 2003 drew threats of a lawsuit from the president and a furious defense from his supporters.

  • Second, Trump directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek the release of all relevant grand jury testimony in the Epstein prosecution — the first substantive gesture toward transparency after shutting down the case entirely.

The thing about conspiracy theories is, when you're a believer, you want to believe. Many MAGAs have become very, very invested in this Epstein thing. I heard someone on TV describing it as the "Rosetta Stone of right-wing conspiracy theories," because they think the files hold the key to exposing all the elite liberals that they hate.

So it might not matter what the leaders of the MAGA movement want. There are going to be lots of people who want to continue the conspiracy theory even after these grand jury transcripts are released. They're going to say, "These aren't the real files. What's still being hidden?" If the leading MAGA podcasters stop talking about Epstein, surely the people invested in the conspiracy will just go elsewhere, and there will be plenty of other podcasters happy to talk about Epstein and gain new listeners.

Even so, I'm saying that people who want to hear about Epstein conspiracy theories can just find other podcasters to listen to -- I'm sure there are plenty of fringe RW podcasters who would be happy to increase their audience by going all in on continuing the Epstein story. It's possible that a chunk of MAGA might splinter off as "Epsteiners."

I like to fly the flag during the day, on appointed holidays, but not in inclement weather.

The MAGAfolk in the area leave their flags up day and night, rain, snow or shine, 24/7/365 and let ‘em get faded, ripped and shredded in the wind. There have been times when I have been tempted to buy new flags and distribute them in return for their ratty old flags, then take their old flags to the VFW to have them burned.

But yeah, they were up for what felt like ages after the election (admittedly this has been the longest six months ever). Awfully insecure for an alleged landslide 🙄🙄🙄

I think it is best if such unlinked, unsubstantiated "rumours", based entirely on speculation, are not posted here.

Sensational claims require sensational evidence. The more crucial the claim, the higher the quality of evidence is needed.

On the other hand, consider the laughable reports we have had of his great health.

Doctor: Trump Dictated Letter Attesting To His 'Extraordinary' Health

MAY 2, 2018 - 2:41 AM ET
By Scott Neuman

In December 2015, Donald Trump's personal physician released a letter describing his patient's health in language that sounded more like it was written by the patient himself than the doctor — and it turns out that might be exactly what happened.

"If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency," Dr. Harold Bornstein, a gastroenterologist from Lenox Hospital in New York, wrote at the time.

The letter said that a recent medical exam showed "only positive results" for the then-candidate and that "his physical strength and stamina are extraordinary."

As NPR's Jessica Taylor reported at the time: "The full letter is written in true Trumpian fashion, full of hyperbole and boasting of greatness. Bornstein calls Trump's blood pressure 'astonishingly excellent.' "

Dr. Ronny Jackson’s glowing bill of health for Trump

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington

CNN — Dr. Ronny Jackson, the presidential physician, gushed about President Donald Trump’s health during a briefing before the White House press corps on Tuesday, touting the President’s “good genes,” how he did “exceedingly well” on his cognitive test and his “excellent” cardiac health.

Jackson said Trump urged the doctor to “answer every question” the media had before he stepped up to the podium, and he did so with gusto during an almost hour-long briefing with the media, in a remarkable show of transparency.

Here is some of the praise Jackson lavished on Trump during Tuesday’s briefing:

‘Incredible genes’
The President doesn’t have a daily physical fitness routine, the doctor said. And Trump’s penchant for Diet Coke, McDonald’s, red meat and vanilla ice cream has been widely reported.

But while Jackson acknowledged he advised Trump – who is 6 foot, 3 inches and weighs 239 pounds – to eat better and exercise more, he said it’s genetics that have kept Trump in sterling health.

Updated: Q&A on Trump’s COVID-19 Diagnosis
By Jessica McDonald and Lori Robertson

Posted on October 2, 2020 | Updated on October 7, 2020

On Oct. 2, President Donald Trump revealed that he and First Lady Melania Trump had tested positive for COVID-19. Here we answer common questions about the risks of the disease, treatments available and the shortcomings of testing.

What do we know about Trump’s risk of developing serious COVID-19?

Without knowing all of Trump’s medical history, it is difficult to know how dangerous his SARS-CoV-2 infection might be. On the morning of Oct. 2, news outlets reported — and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows confirmed — that the president was experiencing only mild symptoms.

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany reiterated the symptoms were “mild” in the afternoon, though Trump was taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and would be “working from the presidential offices at Walter Reed for the next few days,” McEnany said.

“Mild,” yup, so “mild” he almost died, fortunately (for him) he had the very best healthcare available at the time…

15. Justice Dept. asks court to release Epstein grand jury testimony
Sat Jul 19, 2025, 04:23 PM
Saturday

This is a stunt which would not include the vast majority of the file on Epstein. First, it is highly unlikely that the court will release these files given the appeal by Maxwell. The material in these transcripts are a very tiny part of the material in the FBI/DOJ possession.

This is a stunt to try to take pressure off trump.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/07/18/bondi-epstein-files-documents-grand-jury-testimony-doj/

The Justice Department on Friday asked a federal court to release grand jury transcripts connected to deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein, responding to a growing political outcry over the agency’s unfulfilled promise to release more details on the government’s investigation of his alleged sex-trafficking of minors......

A judge would have to agree to release them, a process that could take weeks or months. Even then, their disclosure is by no means certain. Grand jury records are shielded by secrecy rules to protect crime victims, witnesses and the accused, and are made public only under limited circumstances......

The sealed transcripts would constitute only a fraction of the evidence and investigative material that the FBI amassed during its years-long investigation. The transcripts are unlikely to fully satisfy Trump’s right-wing base, which continues to call for full transparency surrounding the investigation.

“It is generally a very, very small portion of any investigative file,” said Christopher O’Leary, who spent more than two decades as an FBI counterterrorism agent.

The full extent of what remains under wraps is unclear. Thousands of pages of documents related to the Epstein investigation have already been released through lawsuits, court filings, public records requests and the Justice Department’s prosecution of Maxwell......

As recently as last year, the younger Comey had sought in court to keep records pertaining to some aspects of the Epstein investigation under wraps in a suit brought by the gossip website Radar Online seeking FBI records. Comey pushed against making those documents public in a January 2024 court filing, saying it could interfere with Maxwell’s ongoing appeal of her conviction and subject victims and witnesses to “embarrassment and potential harassment.”

Indeed.

The identities of co-conspirators and other secondary figures would not be necessary to establish probable cause for an indictment of Epstein.

Trump would only call for the release of this evidence unless he was sure he wasn't mentioned in it.
