'I'm alarmed': Bill Gates op-ed warns GOP risking lives -- and national security

Source: Raw Story

July 14, 2025 7:46PM ET

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates took the Senate to task on Monday afternoon in a Wall Street Journal op-ed as the lawmakers eye cuts to what he called "almost every single effective lifesaving aid program."

The Senate is poised to mull over a rescission bill that aims to do away with more than $8 billion in foreign aid, including nearly $1 billion in direct aid for global health programs. That's in addition to the billions in aid already canceled.

"I’m alarmed at how a bid to eliminate inefficiencies in the U.S. budget—an important task—has put us on the verge of cutting funds for almost every single effective lifesaving aid program and, with it, our country’s proud history of helping others less fortunate than ourselves," Gates warned.

He pleaded with GOP leaders to "understand what this spending is" — and what it is not — before deciding to slash the money for global health programs. They should also learn "all the U.S. has gained from it," he added. Gates shared three facts about health aid that have been lost in the discussion.

Buffet has also been giving his to the Gates' foundation along with those by his children and in memory of his wife - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10143487395

The reason why those 2 aren't #1 & #2 on the Forbes list instead of Muskrat and Bozos is because they have been giving their money away to their foundations over the past 15 years. Otherwise they would have as much or more than the 2 greedy miscreants.

office. They've done it to every Democratic president.

Don't throw out the babies with the bathwater; it's not all or nothing. While we don't want oligarchy, most billionaires want democracy.

Remember: Gates has credibility as a billionaire with Republicans. Also keep in mind that there are good billionaires as well as bad.

Michael Bloomberg, in 2024, was the largest philanthropic donor in America, giving away $3.7 billion. He also made a $1.8 billion pledge to Johns Hopkins University to make medical school tuition-free for some students and support financial aid for others.

George Soros focuses his philanthropy through the Open Society Foundations on promoting human rights and democracy, particularly in Eastern Europe.

... I see a number of schools, hospital, nature conservancy efforts with the names of Bill and Melinda, Buffet, Clinton's and a few others. It makes a difference here.

My own job is funded though the MasterCard Foundation.

USAID was on many more places and efforts, but that is quickly dwindling. Which is a huge shame.

Gates is right in his editorial. The US is making a huge mistake by doing away with USAID, one it will take decade to fix, if we ever can.

on a billionaire who’s done jack shit to change the system that created billionaires. That he’s less of an asshole than another billionaire doesn’t change anything. It’s like praising the slave owner who set his slaves free in his will. He was still a slaveowner.

But doing that wouldn’t automatically make me a better or worse person. Sometimes, it’s more helpful to reflect on what we’re each able to give, rather than judging what someone else should be giving. It can lead to a broader, more constructive perspective.

We need corporate leaders to speak out. People remain silent because they fear Krasnov, thank you Bill Gates for speaking the truth in a country full of lies.

We need church leaders to speak out, we need Pope Leo to speak out.

We should have done town halls that put faces to the harm the Big Ugly Death Bill is going to do, and now we have another Big Ugly Death Bill.

"our own".

He has been more public service minded than the majority of billionaires (I credit his ex-wife for that), but he has still shown a lot of the typical traits of billionaires. He has become more sympathetic to our views as he has become the target of Right-wing conspiracy nonsense, but the rise of the Tech Bros is to be found on his doorstep. He was the first, and built his fortune on a monopoly that crushed his competitors when he was unable to simply buy them.

But even if Gates wanted the company to do something, his influence is limited.

Even the CEO is held accountable to the board, and I don’t think the MS board is as corrupt as say Tesla’s where they basically are yes men and women to Elon.

And as American capitalism would have it, maximizing shareholder profit would likely win out, so we’re not going to see them jeopardizing government contracts. Microsoft saw what happens with Trump and the Jedi contract. They benefited that time, at Amazon’s loss, but next time could be very different.
