Looks like their on purpose fire got away from them.

This time of year, weird winds kick up suddenly.

In hindsight, I guess they should have tried to immediately put it out rather than let it burn. I don't know if that was standard operating procedure.

Too bad they didn't try to put it out when it was first spotted.

And sadly it will never get rebuilt under this administration because they hate public parks and he’ll probably sell it off to the highest bidder who gives him a cut on the side deposited into his hidden offshore account.

The wife and I stayed at the North Rim Lodge about 30 years ago. Simply magnificent. It's emblematic of what's happening in the country. Disasters coming hot and heavy.

We took the train from Williams to the Grand Canyon and saw the lodge and said next time we’re staying there.

Is there a fire map? I know a family that owns a hotel campground on the area. They had a close fire a few years ago and were pretty pissed off at the Forest Service about it then. Another "contolled" burn. Oh shit

It was Jacob Lake Inn and that White Sage Fire is closer than the other that burned th GC lodge. Too close, really. I saw on their website they were under evacuation orders.

But they were managing it as a controlled fire and it got out of control. Too bad they didn't attempt to put it out when it was first spotted.

89A is closed on both sides of the Y for 67 ant it is closed as well.

which is pretty stupid given it's July. I doubt this had anything to do with the park service cuts, it sounds more like just a dumb decision.

"Only" went to the South Rim...which is where I wanted to go. This was part of my across the USA trip in '79.

While I did a good mix of planning, and spur-of-the-moment decisions; the one I didn't think through enough was The Grand Canyon. Didn't occur that the South Lodge, hotel etc would be filled up. Duh!
It also seemed that many rooms were booked from a Phienix to GC run; wherein I was coming from Flagstaff.

I took a bus that was a Noonish to 4PM visit. It was partly disappointing at first. BUT...how could that be, it's the GC?!!

Well, at noon; besides the rocks next level down looking a faded red- when you looked out across the whole canyon - it was all blues, from very pale to medium dark, along with darkish red-purples. Hardly any shadows.
Where were the glorious warm colors we all know ?!
It was very flat looking: like a diorama! Didn't look real, at all.Very weird.

But finally around 3PM the sun got to the right angle to bring out the pale yellows, ocher, golden ochers, oranges, red oranges we all know, and love from photos.

Hopefully, we get our country back, and a Dem administration will rebuilt if this damn republican Congress doesn't!!

It’s bad. Really bad. Almost every North Rim building is either badly damaged or burned down. Inner Canyon is closed.

I’m what would be termed a “second responder”. Infrastructure work. We’re hearing at least two weeks before we can check it out.

This is one of my Favorite Places in the World. More than a little heartbroken.
