Trump Threatens GOP Senators Who Don't Vote to Defund PBS and NPR

Source: MEDIAite

Jul 11th, 2025, 6:43 am

President Donald Trump threatened to revoke his endorsement of any Republican senator who fails to back his push to defund PBS and NPR as he seeks to tip the scale ahead of a Senate showdown over a $9.4 billion spending rollback.

The Senate is poised to vote next week on the rescissions package already passed by the House in a razor-thin 214-212 margin. At stake is $1.1 billion earmarked for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds PBS, NPR, and hundreds of local stations. Posting to Truth Social on Thursday night, the president declared:

It is very important that all Republicans adhere to my Recissions Bill and, in particular, DEFUND THE CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING (PBS and NPR), which is worse than CNN & MSDNC put together. Any Republican that votes to allow this monstrosity to continue broadcasting will not have my support or Endorsement. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Senate Majority Leader John Thune signaled an “amendment process” is likely, as several Republicans have voiced concerns over proposed cuts to AIDS prevention, public health, and local media outlets. The bill must pass by a July 18 deadline or the funding remains untouched.

Do they know they can do something about that, if they have just a little bit of courage?

Trump's base is turning on him. What is he going to do, threaten the senators jobs? Do you think he has the energy and time to find republican opponents? I predict most of them will lose their jobs anyway because they can't govern. Their disastrous policies have affected all Americans, left and right. Remember, the rich are a small sliver compared to the rest of the voters. People are pissed off.

5. Three things we can DO:

Now is the time to use your voice and show your support. Here are three things you can do:

Write or call our senators and ask them to urge their fellow lawmakers to stand up for public media by voting down this rescission package. If you are one of the many fans and supporters of HPR not in Hawaiʻi, you can use this simple form from Protect My Public Media to get the message to elected officials in your state.
Share this message with your family, friends and networks and encourage them to use their voice. If you are on social media, we've made it easy for you to show your support with our outreach kit.
Donate to HPR. We are a community-backed public service that is able to serve Hawaiʻi because of the support we receive from the people we do this essential work for.
Attempts to defund public media have happened in the past, but none have gotten this far.

As this rescission package moves to the Senate, there's still a fighting chance to protect HPR and all public media.

At HPR, we have been humbled and wowed by the outpouring of so many forms of support and encouragement — emails, calls, donations and spreading the word to family and friends. Mahalo to our supporters and fans for all the inspiration that readies us for the continued battle ahead, and for the continued fight against misinformation and polarization.

You are invited to join us for a town hall conversation Wednesday, June 18 at 12:30 p.m. We'll share updates and next steps, and welcome your thoughts and questions. REGISTER HERE.

Now is the time to stand with Hawaiʻi Public Radio — and all of public media — and show your support for the truly essential work that informs, inspires, and connects Hawaiʻi and communities everywhere.

We are honored to serve you, and all of Hawaiʻi, now and always.

Did someone tell trump that ending his "memos" like this made him sound more professional.

it seems he thinks PBS and NPR are the Corporation for Public Broadcasting -- that is, they comprise it -- which is incorrect.

Even when it comes to MASTERPIECE, Mysteries, Cooking Shows, Documentaries, Antiques Roadshow, Sesame Street, and so much more.

NPR is an independent bastion of news and information.

I used to watch the various iterations of "Wall Street Week" with Louis Rukeyser, all before the 24/7 cable business channels like CNBC, et al.
