Paramount's Outrageous '60 Minutes' Settlement May Be Even Worse Than It Appears

The dealings to settle President Donald Trumps lawsuit against 60 Minutes may have been even more complicated and unseemly than was initially known. Trump on Thursday claimed that the settlement ― which consisted of a $16 million payout largely to his presidential library ― was actually worth significantly more because it also included advertising that CBS would eventually run.
We did a deal for about $16 million plus $16 million, or maybe more than that in advertising. So its a combination of 16 plus 16 plus. So its like $32 [million] to maybe $35 million, Trump said, according to a White House press pool report from The Washington Posts Cat Zakrzewski.
Trump also praised David Ellison, the son of one of his close allies and chief executive at Skydance Media, an independent studio thats attempting to merge with Paramount, CBS News parent company. The $8 billion merger will require approval from the Trump administrations Federal Communications Commission, which has led many to fear that the Paramount settlement is really about greasing the governments wheels. Paramount denies this.
Trumps comments appear to reference a side deal reported by the New York Posts Charles Gasparino, who broke the news about an alleged offer that Ellison put forth. Gasparino reported that Ellison promised to run between $15 million and $20 million of public service ads [on CBS] to promote causes supported by the president once his companys merger with Paramount was complete.

(130 posts)that when viewed as the participants in this deal (CBS & Trump) do there is absolutely nothing wrong with this deal.
CBS sees the news department just like they see any other department. It's simply a matter of profit.
News is not a public trust to them it's just another profit/loss line on the annual report, so who gives a rat's ass about it other than maintaining its profitability or leveraging its importance to increase profits elsewhere in the corporation.
15M (or 35M) is a small price to pay, from their perspective, for getting approval for their merger.
After all, it's just bidness.

(1,079 posts)It's a part of their business that's now worth nothing.
It may be but a small part of Redstone's problems unloading this property (a problem she bought for herself, having turned down several deals in the past). But this agreement sacrifices one of the worthwhile businesses.

(1,490 posts)even remotely, questionably construable about a Democrat, they need to sue for , ah, 16 million? Or more?
Every left hand compliment, every possible item taken out of context should bring legal action. Hurt feelings, ya know. And may influence a Democrat's political influence!
Hey Chuckie, you wondered what to do? Do this now.
Be careful CBS, you may get more than you bargained for.

(1,474 posts)Republicans have realized that if you control the federal government you can use every regulatory agency in it for extortion and personal enrichment instead of for helping the public as they were designed, and their voters are fine with that as long as they're extorting industries and people perceived as "liberal".
