Consumer confidence sours in June, despite rollback of Trump's tariffs

Consumer confidence soured in June, erasing some of the boost in shopper attitudes that took hold last month as President Donald Trump rolled back tariffs, Conference Board data on Tuesday showed. The reading fell short of economists' expectations.

The fresh data resumes a trend of worsening consumer confidence that stretches back to the outset of 2025. Last month, a burst of enthusiasm appeared to snap the malaise but fresh data suggests shoppers remain concerned about the path of the U.S. economy.

The decline in consumer confidence took hold across all age, income demographics and political affiliations, the Conference Board said, noting an especially large dropoff among Republicans.

"Consumer confidence weakened in June, erasing almost half of May's sharp gains," Stephanie Guichard, senior economist for global indicators at the Conference Board, said in a statement.

Even minimum wage jobs in fast food restaurants are getting harder to find. My daughter and all the neighbor kids are struggling for summer jobs.

Higher prices are coming from tariffs.

You can just feel the economy slowing to a crawl.

And if the reconciliation bill passes the poor and middle class are going to not just get crumbs. We are going to get straight up shafted!

There is no good reason to spend money which is a sign of support for this corrupt admin that favors the fat cats. Our only recourse is to stop spending - especially at corporate stores!

I haven't been confident since 2009, when I thought we learned our lesson after the housing market collapse. We didn't and I don't put alot of stock in the sotck market or econimic sentiment polls.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® deteriorated by 5.4 points in June, falling to 93.0 (1985=100) from 98.4 in May. The Present Situation Index—based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions—fell 6.4 points to 129.1. The Expectations Index—based on consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business, and labor market conditions—fell 4.6 points to 69.0, substantially below the threshold of 80 that typically signals a recession ahead. The cutoff date for preliminary results was June 18, 2025.

“Consumer confidence weakened in June, erasing almost half of May’s sharp gains,” said Stephanie Guichard, Senior Economist, Global Indicators at The Conference Board. “The decline was broad-based across components, with consumers’ assessments of the present situation and their expectations for the future both contributing to the deterioration. Consumers were less positive about current business conditions than May. Their appraisal of current job availability weakened for the sixth consecutive month but remained in positive territory, in line with the still-solid labor market. The three components of the Expectations Index—business conditions, employment prospects, and future income—all weakened. Consumers were more pessimistic about business conditions and job availability over the next six months, and optimism about future income prospects eroded slightly.”

and aside from around March & April of this year. (I can't determine the exact months because I can't find data without registering, so I'm just reading the graph).

Later: https://www.investing.com/economic-calendar/cb-consumer-confidence-48

Looking at the Expectations index on your 2nd graph, its the lowest its been since 2013 aside from around March & April of this year and aside from slightly lower levels during the worst of the 2022 inflation months.

I also read from the Conference Board's report:
https://www.conference-board.org/topics/consumer-confidence/press/CCI-Jun-2025

Consumers’ average 12-month inflation expectations to 6.0% (down from 6.4% in May and 7% in April).

6.0% is pretty darn high.

Had tariffs put on us for months by Trump, hoping to destroy our economy, our consumer confidence rose slightly and our inflation rate remains approximately 1.7%.
